PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Sparked by four players in double figures, the Pace University men's basketball team earned a 99-64 win over Mercy College on Wednesday night. The victory improves the Setters' record to 4-0 this year—their best start to a season since 1998-99.
A huge first half from Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J./Southern Regional) served as one of the highlights for the Blue and Gold. The senior captain put in 18 points across the opening 20 minutes, leading the Setters to a 45-27 lead at the break.
Pace's edge grew even larger in the second half as a 17-4 run put the Setters ahead by 30 points at the 13:10 mark.
Wejnert finished the contest with a game-high 20 points, in addition to grabbing a team-best eight rebounds. He is now averaging 21.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
Junior Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) put forth a stellar effort of his own, tallying a double-double of 15 points and 11 assists. He knocked in three more attempts from beyond the arc, and is now 11-of-19 from three-point land this season (.579).
Classmate Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) also made a trio of long balls en route to recording 15 points on the night. He added six assists as well.
Freshman Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) was Pace's final player in double figures with 12 points, to go along with six rebounds
The Setters put together a season-high 14 steals in the contest—led by a team-high four tallied by senior Ray Montilus (Union, N.J./Pope John XXII). Pace's defense also limited Mercy to 20-of-52 shooting from the field (.385), including 10-for-25 from three-point range.
