MANCHESTER, N.H. – Taking the court twice on Saturday, the Pace University volleyball team split a pair of matches. The Setters rebounded from a tight 3-2 defeat (17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 13-15) to Saint Anselm College with a 3-1 triumph (17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22) over Edinboro University. The split for the day shifts Pace's record to 6-2 so far this season.
Match Two: Pace 3, Edinboro 1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22)
The Setters showed great resilience on Saturday as they were able to rebound from a tight loss in the day's first match to record a win in the finale. Pace also answered back from a one-set deficit against the Scots, rattling off three games in a row.
Tatjana Calimpong-Burke (Waianae, HI/Iolani) and
Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) proved to be the catalysts on offense, combining for 24 of Pace's 44 kills. Fontanet was especially efficient, recording just one error and a .481 hitting percentage. She finished the day with 30 kills and 26 digs.
Samantha Nidini (Houston, TX/Clearlake) and
Katy Motz (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park) shared the passing responsibilities, totaling 31 assists in the match. Defensively, junior
Danielle Vaiano (Seaford, NY/St. Anthony's) tallied a team-high 16 digs while freshman
Sandra Yang (Bothell, WA/Edmonds-Woodway) notched a solo block and a pair of block assists.
Match One: Saint Anselm 3, Pace 2 (17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 13-15)
It was a back and forth first match as the Hawks and Setters exchanged sets until a final 15-13 fifth frame provided Saint Anselm the victory.
Fontanet piled up season-highs in both kills (16) and digs (19) while also hitting .421 without an error. Calimpong-Burke followed with another double-double effort with 12 kills and 10 digs. Nidini and Motz also posted double-doubles, totaling 39 assists and 26 digs between them.
Vaiano and
Kathleen Benson (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) were up to their usual defensive ways. Benson tallied three solo blocks while Vaiano picked up 21 digs. As a team, Pace racked up a season-high 12 blocks. In fact, the Setters' 12 blocks are their most in a match since 2016.
