Pace Football Falls to New Haven in Home Opener

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University football team was defeated in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of New Haven, 36-10. The Setters move to 1-1 on the season with the loss.

Inside the Numbers
*Brandon Simmons (Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross Academy) had another solid game under center to begin his Pace career, going 15-for-23 for 225 yards and his first passing touchdown of the season. Darius Jones (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) accounted for the touchdown reception, hauling in a 23-yard scoring pass. On the specials team front, Pat Davis (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) remained perfect on field-goal attempts for the season, nailing a 24-yard kick in the second quarter.

*Coming off 190 yards rushing last week against Millersville, the Setters ground game was held in check by the Chargers defense. Pace accumulated 106 yards rushing, with Jhalen Bien-Aime (Dorchester, MA/Bridgton Academy) leading the team with 51.

*Ramir Tann-Davis (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Eastside) was Pace's leading receiver on the day, making two catches for 92 yards. Adrian Rybaltowski (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) also had a strong performance, hauling in four passes for 68 yards.

*Prince Unaegbu (Boston, MA/Brighton) led the defensive effort with a 10-tackle game, four being solo efforts. Dustin Huseinovic (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) recorded the lone sack for the Pace defense in the contest, while Eli Simmons, Jr. (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) forced a fumble for the Blue and Gold.

*New Haven was able to win the turnover battle, forcing a pair of Setters fumbles and an interception. The Chargers controlled possession for 37:39, 15 minutes more than Pace's time with the ball.

How it Happened
The Chargers opened up the game with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, but a missed PAT attempt after the first score and a blocked kick by Dan Pelish (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) on the second attempt kept the New Haven lead at 12-0 heading into the second quarter.

Continuing their drive from the end of the first quarter, the Setters' offense was able to march down the field for a touchdown of their own. Simmons connected with Jones for a 23-yard completion in the end zone to put the Setters on the board. Following another New Haven touchdown, the Setters drove into the Chargers red zone, leading to Davis' 24-yard field goal. The Chargers added a kick of their own as the half expired to send them into the locker room with a 22-10 lead.

The Chargers would add to their lead with a touchdown in each quarter of the second half. The Setters, meanwhile, got into turnover trouble in the fourth, as a fumble and interception ended Pace drives on the New Haven side of the field. The Chargers put the ball into the end zone again with 2:36 left on the clock, putting New Haven ahead with the eventual final of 36-10.

Up Next
The Setters are back on the road next week, traveling to AIC for a noon contest on Saturday against the Yellow Jackets.
