Pace Volleyball Records a Pair of Sweeps to Begin 2018

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  – Seeing their first action of 2018, the Pace University volleyball team put together a pair of neutral-court victories on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. The Setters didn't drop a single set en route to wins over Dominican College and Nyack College.

Match One: Pace 3, Dominican 0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-5)
It was a dominant and balanced effort in Pace's opener as six different Setters recorded at least three kills in the win. The Blue and Gold also recorded double-digit wins in each game, including a decisive 25-5 margin in the finale.

Senior Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) led the Pace contingent with seven kills, while junior Tatjana Calimpong-Burke (Waianae, HI/Iolani) registered the highest hitting percentage (.417), while also totaling six put-aways of her own. Additionally, Calimpong-Burke manufactured a team-high 11 digs, while sophomore Christal Wong (Elk Grove, CA/Cosumnes Oaks) hammered a squad-best seven service aces. As a team, the Blue and Gold put together a 17-3 margin in aces.

Pace led Dominican by at least seven points throughout the three sets after beginning the match on an 11-0 stretch.

Match Two: Pace 3, Nyack 0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-13)
It was another commanding victory for the Setters in the second match of the day. Pace led wire-to-wire versus Nyack, winning each set by double figures.

Calimpong-Burke followed up her great effort from the first match with a double-double against the Warriors. The Hawaii native totaled 13 kills and 12 digs to finish the day with 19 put-ways and 23 digs in six sets of action. Fontanet was also strong in the second outing of the day, recording nine more kills and 11 digs.

Junior Samantha Nidini (Houston, TX/Clearlake) orchestrated Pace's offense out of the setter position, dishing out a match-high 22 assists. She also added four kills and six digs.

The Setters will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Molloy College for a 7 p.m. start.
