WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite scoring a pair of runs in the ninth inning to send the game into extras, the Pace University baseball team dropped a 5-4 contest to Bentley University on Sunday afternoon. The loss moves the Setters to 12-9-1 overall, and 6-5 against the Northeast-10 Conference.
Down 4-2 with two outs in the ninth inning,
Paul Piccolino (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) tied the game with a two-run single to left field.
Riley Iafrate (Harrington Park, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and
Greg Tsouprakos (West Islip, NY/West Islip) each scored on the play. Tsouprakos led off the inning with a hit while Iafrate was pinch running for
Matthew Kurdewan (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), who also recorded a single in the inning.
The Falcons would go on to secure the win in the 11
th as Ryan Beradino registered a game-winning hit to center with one out.
The Setters used four pitchers in the contest, with
Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack) suffering the loss. Russo had pitched well for Pace, allowing just one earned run over four innings. Senior
Ryan Aquino (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck) also worked four frames, yielding a pair of runs.
Kurdewan led the Setters at the dish, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Piccolino and
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) also tallied multiple hits.
The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Salmonese crossed the plate on a Piccolino double play.
The Falcons took their first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on RBI hits from Beradino and Brandon Grover.
Piccolino struck again for Pace in the fifth, tying the game on a solo home run over the left-field wall.
Bentley registered runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 lead prior to Pace's rally in the ninth.
