SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Although they cut the lead to just two goals twice in the second half, the eighth-ranked Pace University men's lacrosse team was defeated at No. 1 Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon, 11-8. The loss shifts the Setters' record to 5-3 this season, while the Dolphins improve to 10-0.
Inside the Numbers
*The Blue and Gold had just four scorers tally their eight goals. Junior
Bradley Paterson (Caldwell, NJ/Depaul Catholic) led the way with three tallies, while
Joseph Diggle (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and
Kevin Vogelsberg (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan) each had two. Senior
Ryan O'Hagan (Watervliet, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) rounded out the attack with a goal of his own.
*Senior
Robert Beshlian (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) posted 10 saves in net, suffering his third loss of the season. Beshlian has registered double-digit stops in all but one game this season.
*Le Moyne won 15-of-22 face-offs while Pace earned a 25-24 edge in ground balls.
Dom Albi (Bellmore, NY/Bellmore JFK) picked up a team-high four ground balls.
How it Happened
Vogelsberg put in each of Pace's first two goals, the second one tying the score up, 2-2, with 8:24 left in the first. The Dolphins would go on to score three-straight, taking the early momentum into the second quarter.
Paterson halted the Dolphins' rally with his first goal early in the second frame. As was the case for most of the game, Le Moyne answered Pace with two goals of their own. A Matt Hutchings tally at 7:27 of the second quarter produced a 7-3 lead for the home team. Diggle notched the final goal of the first half, cutting the Dolphins' edge to 7-4 at the break.
Pace and Le Moyne exchanged a pair of goals after halftime, keeping the Dolphins' lead at three. Paterson would break the back-and-forth with his second tally of the game to slim the edge to 9-7 with 44 seconds left in the third.
Following another Le Moyne goal to begin the fourth, Paterson would strike again to cut the advantage to 10-8 with a little over eight minutes left in regulation.
Paterson's goal would be the final one for Pace on the afternoon as they couldn't find the back of the net over the last 8:17 of the fourth quarter. Justin Kesselring's second tally of the fourth quarter with 6:17 left, which produced an 11-8 lead, served as the game's final goal.
