WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Fueled by yet another masterful performance from junior
Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC), the Pace University baseball team recorded a 4-1 win over No. 5 New Haven on Thursday afternoon. The victory moves the Setters' record to 12-7-1 overall, and 6-3 inside the NE10.
Wirchansky, already in the midst of a dominant season, raised it to another notch on Thursday. Facing one of the top lineups in the NE10, the left-hander tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing just one earned run and striking out 12. He now stands second in the NE10 with a 0.71 ERA this season and first in the league in strikeouts at 63.
On the offensive side of things, freshman
Harrison Treble (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay/St. Bonaventure) came up with one of Pace's most timely hits of the season so far. Tied 1-1 with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, the rookie Setter tallied a bases-clearing triple to put Pace up 4-1.
Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney),
Paul Piccolino (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and
Matt Almonte (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) each scored on the play.
Wirchansky would go on to allow just one base runner en route to getting the final six outs of the game. In fact, after giving up one run in the first inning on two walks and a hit, Wirchansky yielded just one hit the rest of the way. He had entered the contest having given up just one walk all season.
The Setters tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from Piccolino.
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) scored on the play after registering a walk, and advancing to third on a fielder's choice and an error.
Pace was only able to muster five hits on the afternoon--three of which came off the bat of Gulino.
