No. 20 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Assumption to Clinch NE10 Tournament Berth

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – With their postseason hopes relying on a victory, the No. 20 Pace University men's lacrosse team picked up a 14-9 win over Assumption College in their regular-season finale. The win improves the Setters' overall record to 7-6 this season, while boosting them to 6-5 inside the Northeast-10 Conference. Pace will now return to the NE10 Championship Tournament for a fourth-straight season, claiming the No. 6 seed.
 
Inside the Numbers
*Liam Brennan (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) was the catalyst of a balanced Pace attack, scoring five points. The senior's three goals and two assists slips him into second on the Setters' all-time points list (219).
 
*Peter Bashar (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph) and Kevin Vogelsberg (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan) ended the night as Pace's other multi-goal scorers. The junior duo each scored two goals.
 
*Seven other Setters found the back of the net with goals. Joshua Kreitler (Shelton, CT/Shelton), Joseph Diggle (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Bradley Paterson (Caldwell, NJ/Depaul Catholic), Vincent Vasheo (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), Wyatt Barfoot (Georgian Bluffs, Ontario/St. Mary's), Michael Pappalardo (Ossining, NY/Ossining), and Spencer DeRosa (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) all played their way on to the scoresheet.
 
*Additionally, seven other Setters joined Brennan in the assist column. As a team, the Setters put together a 25-18 advantage in shots on goal and a 27-20 margin in ground balls.
 
*Senior Robert Beshlian (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) made nine saves in net to secure his seventh win of the year. Beshlian, who ranks third in the NE10 in both total stops and save percentage, surpassed 500 saves for his career on Friday night.
 
How it Happened
Assumption opened up the scoring with two goals by Travis Reid in the opening six minutes. The Setters rebounded in the tail end of the quarter, knotting the score up at 2-2 by the period's end. Brennan recorded his 16th goal of the season to get Pace on the board a minute after Reid's second tally, while Barfoot accounted for the equalizer with under six minutes to play in the quarter.
 
The Setters took the lead with the backend of a five-goal run to begin the second quarter. Brennan notched the first tally of the quarter, catching a pass from Vasheo while midair to bury his second goal of the day. Vogelsberg and Diggle provided tallies to extend Pace's lead to 5-2. Assumption scored their lone goal of the period with 7:22 on the clock, but the Blue and Gold ended the half with three goals over the final five minutes to extend their lead to 8-3 heading into the third quarter.

The Blue and Gold scored twice in the opening 62 seconds, while Bashar added a man-up goal to put Pace ahead 11-3. The Greyhounds would close out the quarter by outscoring Pace, 4-2. Assumption put together a string of two-goal runs, interrupted by scores from Vogelsberg and Kreitler.

Entering the final 15 minutes with a 13-7 advantage, the Setters were able drain the clock. Brennan added the final insurance goal as Pace earned a 14-9 victory, punching their ticket in to the NE10 Tournament.

The sixth-seeded Setters will play at the No. 3 seed on Tuesday to begin the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
