PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A pair of complete games efforts from starting pitchers
Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) and
MacKenzie Garrick (South River, NJ/South River) fueled the Pace University softball team to a sweep of Queens College on Saturday afternoon as the team honored the senior class of 2018. The 5-2 and 3-2 victories improve Pace's record to 19-19 on the season.
Inside the Numbers:
*Flores earned the win in the opener, limiting the Knights to two runs on two hits through seven innings of work. The senior struck out one while picking up her sixth win of the year.
*Garrick was equally strong in the finale, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. The freshman picked up win number four of her rookie campaign.
*
Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) went 3-for-5 across the two games. The freshman scored a run in Game One, drove in two runs in Game Two, and swiped a bag in the finale.
*
Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School),
Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy), and
Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) each had a double on the day.
*Gartner and
Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) collected a pair of RBIs in Saturday's opener to help lead the Pace offense.
Game One Recap: Pace 5, Queens 2
The Knights got on the board first to begin Saturday's action, tagging Flores for a run in the first and the third. After navigating trouble in the first few innings, the senior pitcher was dominant over the final four frames, holding Queens hitless.
Pace capitalized on the solid effort from Flores in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to give the Blue and Gold a lead they never looked back from.
Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) and
Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) reached on back-to-back singles to open up the inning, while
Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) drew a walk two batters later to load the bases. Brown followed up with a single to right to bring home Schafer and cut the Queens lead down to one.
Brambila drove home a pair in Bernstein and Lew with a single to left field to give Pace their first lead of the day. Gartner followed up with a double to score Brown and Brambila to end the Setter offensive burst with the crooked number on the board. Pace took the 5-2 lead heading into the fourth, where the score would hold for the rest of the contest.
The Knights would get three more base runners in the form of walks and a hit by pitch to close out the game, but none were able to get past second base. Flores closed out the game with three fly balls in the seventh as the Setters took Saturday's opener.
Game Two Recap: Pace 3, Queens 2
Garrick picked up where Flores left off to begin the backend of the doubleheader, holding Queens scoreless through the first five innings. While the freshman limited the Knights bats, Pace took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings.
Brown continued her great season at the plate with an RBI single in the first to score
Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) from second. While Brown got the job done with the bat in the first, Lew tacked on the Setters' second run with her legs in the second. After reaching on a fielder's choice, the senior shortstop stole second and third during Labs' at bat. Lew capitalized on her speed, dashing home on a wild pitch to beat the tag and put the Blue and Gold up 2-0.
The Setters would add an insurance run that proved to be the difference maker in the fifth. Wang led off the frame with a double to right center, while Brown once again provided the clutch hit to score her in the next at-bat. Brown would advance to third in the inning, but the Knights stranded her there as they escaped the threat.
Garrick retired 14 straight Knights following their lone single in the first inning to cruise into the sixth. The Queens bats were finally able to solve the freshman pitcher, tagging Garrick for a pair of doubles to cut the Pace lead to 3-1. A sharp line out to right field advanced ToniMarie Valeriano to third, while Ann Grimshaw brought her home with a single as Pace's lead shrunk to a single run. Garrick ended the rally there, striking out Danielle D'Angelo to hold the tying run at first.
The Knights would get the tying run into scoring position in the seventh as Briana Schippell reached on a one out single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Unfazed by the threat, Garrick recorded her third strikeout of the day to end the game and earn a Saturday sweep for the Setters with the 3-2 victory.
