Pace Softball Takes First Two of Weekend Series Against AIC

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Led by a dominant pitching effort in Game One and an offensive explosion in Game Two, the Pace University softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against American International College. The 1-0 and 10-2 wins improve the Setters' record to 13-16, as the Blue and Gold now stand at 7-2 in the division.

Inside the Numbers:
*Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) was masterful in the opener, tossing a complete-game shutout. The sophomore improved to 7-4 with seven innings of two-hit ball, while striking out a season-high nine batters.

*Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) also had a strong start with five innings of work in Saturday's finale. The senior allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out four, as the Pace bats came to life to win the contest via run rule in the fifth inning.

*Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) led the attack at the plate in Game Two with a 3-for-4 showing. The sophomore tallied three RBIs and scored a run to get the Blue and Gold rolling.

*Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) had a 3-for-5 day across the two games, driving in two runs while scoring a pair of runs of her own in the backend of the doubleheader.

*Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School), Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama), Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro), and Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) all added RBIs as part of Pace's 12-hit showing in the finale.

Game One Recap: Pace 1, AIC 0
Bernet was once again a dominant force in the circle, shutting down the Yellow Jacket offense. AIC tagged the sophomore starter for a hit in the first, but Bernet set down the next 12 batters to come to the plate, not allowing another base runner until the fifth inning.

While the Yellow Jacket offense struggled to get anything going against Bernet, the Setters faced a similar issue against AIC starter Kacie Allison. Pace collected three hits over the first five innings, but were unable to get anything in the run column.

The Setters would finally strike first in the pitching duel in the sixth. Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) reached on a hit by pitch to open up the frame. A sacrifice bunt and a groundout advanced her to third, while the senior outfielder eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Pace the 1-0 lead heading into the seventh.

One run was plenty for Bernet to work with, as the sophomore forced three fly balls to retire the side and collect her fifth complete-game win of the season.

Game Two Recap: Pace 10, AIC 2
After a quiet first game, the Pace bats came to life in Saturday's finale, picking up the win in five innings courtesy of the run rule.

After AIC went ahead 1-0 in the first, the Setters responded with a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. A double from Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School), a triple by Wang, and a double off the bat of Brown put Pace ahead 2-1 with nobody away. Chillinsky followed up with a single to score Brown, while Ah Soon drove home the right fielder two batters later with a single of her own.

Pace tacked on two more in the second, as Brown collected her second extra-base hit of the game with a triple to drive home Labs. The freshman would score on a wild pitch in the following at-bat to extend Pace's lead to 6-1.

A Jaime Mainez home run in the third pulled AIC back to within four, but the Setters added another run on a Schafer sacrifice fly that scored Ah Soon to go back up 7-2.

As Flores worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth to maintain Pace's five-run lead, the Setters closed out the contest in the fifth. With two outs, a Schafer single and an error that allowed Emma Carruth (Torrance, CA/Beverly Hills) to get on board, set the Blue and Gold up to do damage. Lew singled to bring home Schafer, while Wang delivered the final blow with a two-run single to close out the contest as Pace went ahead 10-2, winning by the run rule.

Up Next:
Pace looks to pick up the series sweep against AIC as the Setters and Yellow Jackets close out their regular-season meetings tomorrow. First pitch at the Pace Softball Field is scheduled for 11 a.m.
