PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – With a historic achievement within reach, the Pace University softball team split a doubleheader with Caldwell University on Thursday afternoon. The Setters' 12-8 win in Game Two marked the 700th in both school history and in the career of Claudia Stabile, who has been the head coach of Pace Softball since the program started in 1982.
Milestone Moment
*Stabile, now in her 37th year in the dugout, becomes just the 22nd active head coach in all of Division II to join the "700 Club". To go along with the sustained success that she has had, Stabile has led Pace to new heights in recent years. She guided the Setters to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015 before going on to win the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 2016. Stabile was named the 2016 NE10 Coach of the Year.
Inside the Split
*Pace's four-run triumph in Game Two came after the Cougars began the day with a 7-4 win in the opener.
*Pace's offense fueled the day, including season-high efforts in both hits (17) and runs (12) in their Game Two win. Freshman Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) led the Setters at the plate, going 4-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
*Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) and Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) also impressed at the dish. Labs finished 4-for-6 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI, while Ah Soon went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in each game.
*Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School), Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School), Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park), Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson), and Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) all tallied multiple hits in Game Two. Brambila also knocked in a pair.
*Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) earned the win in the nightcap, improving to 6-4 on the season. Although she gave up her first earned run in nearly 29-straight innings, Bernet tossed four solid frames out of the bullpen.
Game Two Recap – Pace 12, Caldwell 8
The Blue and Gold's Thursday win was highlighted by a red-hot offense that completed a five-run comeback. Down 7-2 after three complete, the Setters went off for five in the fourth and five more in the sixth.
After Brown and Brambila both doubled home runs in the first inning, Pace's attack really started to roll in the fourth. The Setters strung together six hits in the frame, including RBI knocks from Ryan, Schafer, and Labs. A sacrifice fly from Brown capped off the rally, and tied the game at 7-7.
Following one more run for Caldwell in the fourth, the Blue and Gold came up with their second five-run inning in the sixth. Bernstein led off the rally with a triple before scoring on a Brown single. After Chillinsky doubled Brown over to third, she would cross the plate on a wild pitch. Pace would then score one more off a sac fly from Brambila before an Ah Soon double to left-center scored two more. Â
Although the Cougars were able to get a pair on base in the seventh inning, Bernet closed the door with a scoreless frame.
Game One Recap – Caldwell 7, Pace 4
Fueled by a pair of home runs from Marisa Monasseri, Caldwell scored the game's first seven runs in the first contest of the day. Monasserri drilled a two-run shot in the first inning before launching a three-run blast in the fifth.
The Setters made things interesting in the fifth, cutting into the lead with four runs. Brown put Pace on the board with an RBI single while Meagan Wells (Foster City, CA/Hillsdale) walked with the bases loaded. Ah Soon capped off the inning with a pair of RBIs off a single to right.
After slimming the edge to just three runs, the Setters were only able to get one base runner over the final two innings.
