OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – After scoring five consecutive runs over the first two innings, the Pace University baseball team played to a 5-5 tie in 10 innings against the New York Institute of Technology before the game was called due to darkness. The Setters' record moves to 2-0-1 on the young season.
Inside the Numbers
*The Setters scored five runs on six hits. First baseman
Brian Bohlander (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) led the offense with a 2-for-3 afternoon, scoring a run and drawing a walk.
*Four different Setters drove in runs on Monday. The top of the Pace lineup—
Ryan Crowley (Cornwall on Hudson, NY/Iona Prep/Monmouth),
Paul Piccolino (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell), and
Michael Salmonese (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick)—each collected an RBI.
Matthew Kurdewan (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) also drove in a runner.
*

*The bullpen arms of
Lorenzo Russo (East Northport, NY/Commack),
Jake Amoroso (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph), and
Alex Busby (Landing, NJ/Roxbury / County College of Morris) closed out the game with a combined five innings of work. Russo struck out three across two innings in his first appearance of 2018.
*The Bears scored the last five runs of the game to knot the game up at 5-5.
How it Happened
The Setters' offense wasted no time getting to NYIT pitcher DJ Masuck, tagging the Bears' starter for five runs in the first two innings. Crowley led off the game by reaching on a hit by pitch and would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to put Pace ahead 1-0.
The Blue and Gold would do the rest of their damage in the next frame.
Felix Camacho (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's High School for Boys / Westchester Community College) opened the second with a leadoff walk, scoring three batters later on an error. After
Matt Bass (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) drew a walk, three straight singles from the bats of Crowley, Piccolino, and Salmonese put the Setters up 5-0 through two innings.
Cashman was able to keep the Bears quiet through the first four innings, allowing only an unearned run. NYIT would strike twice in the bottom of the fifth, but Cashman ended his night with a strikeout to strand a runner at second.
The bats went cold over the next few innings, as neither offense was able to collect a hit until the bottom of the eighth. After working two hitless innings, Russo found trouble in the eighth. NYIT led off the inning with back-to-back home runs to tie the score at 5-5. Amoroso retired the next three batters to keep the game even.
Neither team would manage to get a runner past first base over the final two innings as Amoroso and Busby shut the NYIT offense down by allowing one hit to close out the contest. Pace had an opportunity in the 10
th when Camacho reached on a one-out single, but the Bears turned a double play to end the inning. It was three up, three down for the Bears against Amoroso in the bottom of the tenth before the game was called.
