PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team was toppled by a late-inning Le Moyne scoring rally on Friday afternoon, falling to the Dolphins by a 3-2 final at the Pace Softball Field.
Inside the Numbers
*Hitting at the top of the order,
Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) continued her strong season at the plate with a 3-for-4 day. The senior outfielder was involved in both of Pace's scoring plays with a run and an RBI on her stat line.
*Labs was one of three Setters to record a double in the contest, joining
Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) and
Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek).
*
Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) picked up an RBI on Pace's first run of the game, while Carberry scored in the fourth to extend Pace's lead.
*
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
*The Dolphins scored three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win in the series opener.
How It Happened
The Setters looked primed to take a big early advantage, loading the bases in the first inning with one out. Dolphins' pitcher Alexis Eastman was able to escape danger with a strikeout and a groundout to hold the Setters off the board.
Eastman would not have such luck in the third, as Labs opened the inning with a lead-off double. After a sacrifice bunt advanced her to third, Brown picked up her fourth RBI of the year with a deep sacrifice fly to right field. The Setters would continue to threaten as Chillinsky reached on a double and advanced to third on a passed ball, but another Eastman strikeout ended the Setter rally at one run.
Pace extended the lead to 2-0 in the next inning with a mini rally started with Carberry's lead-off double. Labs' third hit of the day drove her home three batters later as the Blue and Gold took a two-run advantage past the halfway point.
After allowing just one hit through the first four innings, Bernet ran into trouble in the fifth. With two away in the inning, the Dolphins got on the board following a single and a two-run home run off the bat of Jillian McManus. Le Moyne would take the first lead of the day in the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI double from Tess Andrews.
Eastman retired the last nine Setters to secure the 3-2 victory in game one of the three-game weekend series.
