Pace Softball Splits Doubleheader at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team split a doubleheader on the road at Molloy College on Wednesday afternoon, falling in Game One 8-3 before rebounding with a 5-0 victory in the closer. The Setters' record now stands at 4-11 on the year.

Inside the Numbers
*It was a dominant performance in the circle by Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) in Game Two that ended the day on a high note for the Blue and Gold. The sophomore went seven innings deep for the second time this season, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out five. Her record improves to 2-2.

*At the plate, freshman Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) had the best day of her young collegiate career. Ryan hit her first two home runs of the season with a long ball in each game.

*Senior Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) also showed some power, smashing her first homer of the season in Game 2.

*Senior Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) went 3-for-8 across the two contests, collecting two RBIs and hitting her team-leading third and fourth doubles in the opener.

*Sophomore Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) hit her second double of the season in Wednesday's opener, while classmate Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) added her first two-bagger of the year in the tailend of the doubleheader.

Game One Recap: Molloy 8, Pace 3
Molloy got the scoring started early, earning a run in the bottom of the first. Kaitlyn Snyder reached on a leadoff double and came around to score two batters later on a wild pitch.

While the first seven batters to come to the plate for Pace were retired, Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) collected Pace's first hit of the day with a single in the top of the third. Labs would capitalize on the early runner, driving her home with a double to left center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lions jumped back in front in the bottom half with two runs of their own. Labs would cut into the lead with her second RBI double of the day to score Wang again in the fifth inning, but Molloy would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth. The Lions put up a four-spot in the frame to go ahead 7-2.

Ryan hit her first long ball of the day in the top of the sixth, but the Lions added a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 8-3. Jenna Turato sat down three straight Setters in the seventh to wrap up her complete game effort.

Game Two Recap: Pace 5, Molloy 0
The Setters were able to get revenge in the closer of Wednesday's action as Bernet went the distance with a complete game victory of her own for the Blue and Gold. The sophomore righty needed just 77 pitches to earn the win, never allowing a runner to advance past first base.

While Bernet was shutting down the Lions offense, allowing just four hits, the Blue and Gold bats provided her with early run support. The Setters scored twice in the first inning, getting the bases loaded with one away. A single off the bat of Kahlie Bickerstaff (Bradenton, Florida/Lakewood Ranch) scored Labs, while Lindsey Ah Soon (Ewa Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) drove in Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) one batter later on a fielder's choice.

Lew added to the Pace lead with a solo shot in the second to put the Setters up 3-0. Molloy, meanwhile, would finally get to Bernet with their first hit of the game in the third inning, but a lineout ended the inning with no harm done.

Pace added a run in the fifth and sixth inning. Ryan hit her second homer of the day in the top of fifth to further the Setters' lead to 4-0, while Bickerstaff drove in her second run of the game with a single to score Schafer one inning later. The Lions would manage just one baserunner over the final two innings, as Bernet closed out a shutdown effort with her fifth strikeout of the game to secure the 5-0 win for Pace.

Pace returns home for a three-game weekend series with Le Moyne starting on Friday. First pitch between the Setters and Dolphins is scheduled for 4 p.m.
