WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Seeing action on the road for the first time in conference play, the Pace University softball team tallied a 5-4 win over the University of Haven on Tuesday afternoon.
In a back and forth game, that featured three different lead changes, junior
Kahlie Bickerstaff (Bradenton, Florida/Lakewood Ranch) doubled in senior
Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) from second base for the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Carberry was pinch-running for freshman
Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson), who knocked a one-out, pinch-hit single to spark the rally.
Sophomore
Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) closed the door in the bottom half of the seventh, tossing her third scoreless inning of the game to secure the win for Pace.
The Setters had to battle back from a pair of deficits against New Haven. After going down 1-0 in the first, sophomore
Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) put Pace on the board with an RBI single in the third. Seniors
Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) and
Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) both scored on the play, giving Pace a 2-1 lead.
Pace padded its edge the following inning thanks to an RBI double from Lew to score
Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School).
The Chargers enjoyed their best frame in the fourth, putting three on the board to once again grab a one-run lead at 4-3.
Pace's tying run came in the fifth off an
Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) RBI single to left. Gartner scored on the play after knocking a one-out single and advancing to second on a hit-by-pitch.
Gartner led Pace offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI on the day. Labs also posted multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.
