Pace Softball Begins NE10 Action With Doubleheader Split Against Saint Michael's

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – While allowing just one earned run over 14 innings, the Pace University softball team earned a doubleheader split against Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon. The Setters rebounded from a 2-1 loss in Game One with a 5-1 triumph in the finale.

Inside the Numbers
*Pace was given solid pitching efforts from both starters, Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) and Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School). Each hurler recorded complete-game efforts, totaling 10 strikeouts between the two of them. Bernet took a tough loss in the first contest after allowing just a single earned run.

*As has been the case this season, Pace's offense was piloted once again by Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School). Labs tallied Pace's lone hit in the first game while going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap. She is now batting a team-best .382.

*After going 0-for-2 with a walk in Game One, junior Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) was a red-hot 3-for-3 with an RBI in the Setters' win.

*Brianna Parks (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) and Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) each provided a spark in Game Two, combining to go 4-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored.

*After the lone knock in the first game, Pace rattled off a season-high 13 hits in contest two. Four Setters finished with multiple hits.

Game One Recap – Saint Michael's 2, Pace 1
The Purple Knights tallied their runs in the first and the fourth innings—each time courtesy of RBI hits from Torie Rathwell.

Pace was able to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Briana Ryan (Wilmington, CA/Carson) earned a bases-loaded walk, scoring Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) from third base. Gartner and Carberry each walked while Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) was hit by a pitch.

With the bases still loaded with just one out in the fourth, the Setters were unable to plate another run. Pace left five runners on base in the game.

After allowing two hits in the first inning, Bernet, Pace's starting pitcher, scattered just four the rest of the game.

Game Two Recap – Pace 5, Saint Michael's 1
The Blue and Gold didn't allow the offensive frustration carry into Game Two as they registered their highest hit total of the season (13).

Pace scored runs in each of the first two innings to seize an early 2-0 lead. Wang recorded the RBI hit in the first inning while Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) scored on a wild pitch in the second.

After the Purple Knights cut into the edge in the third, Pace tallied lone tallies in the bottom half of that inning, as well as the fourth and the sixth.

Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park), Carberry and Labs all posted RBI hits, providing insurance runs for the stellar effort from Flores, who tossed the complete-game in the circle.
