Pace Softball Falls Twice to Mercy in Home-Opening Doubleheader

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Playing on their home field for the first time this season, the Pace University softball team dropped a pair of games to Mercy College on Tuesday afternoon.

Inside the Numbers
*Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) was Pace's leading force at the plate, putting together a 5-for-6 afternoon. The senior centerfielder was 3-for-3 in Game Two, scoring a run while legging out a double and a triple.

*Meagan Wells (Foster City, CA/Hillsdale) and Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) picked up a hit in both games. The junior Wells collected her first RBI of the season with a double in Game One while swiping a bag in each contest.

*Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) collected her first double of the season in Game One, while Aby Brambila (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) added a two bagger in the closer.

Game One Recap - Mercy 14, Pace 3 (Five Innings)
The Setters found themselves behind the eight ball early, as Mercy tagged starter MacKenzie Garrick (South River, NJ/South River) for three runs in the opening inning. The freshman was able to keep the Mavericks where they were over the next two innings, but Mercy tacked on another three runs in the fourth inning.

The Setters posted their first-ever run at the Pace Softball Field in the bottom of the frame following back-to-back doubles from Wells and Brambila to open the inning. That would be all the Setters would be able to muster in the fourth as Kaylee Stevens retired the next three batters.

Mercy added on eight runs in the fifth, and while the Setters were able to collect two more runs off of Stevens in the bottom half off of RBIs from Gartner and Wells, the Mavericks took the win in the opener, 14-3.

Game Two Recap – Mercy 9, Pace 2 (Five Innings)
The backend of the doubleheader began more in Pace's favor, as the Blue and Gold were able to score two early runs in the second inning. A lead-off single by Brambila set the stage, who moved into scoring position after Niyah Brown (Chino, CA/Chino Hills) reached on a hit by pitch. Carberry drove Brambila home with a double to left field, while came around to score one batter later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School).

Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) was able to control the Mavericks' bats in the first two innings, allowing just two hits. Mercy would score their first run of the game in the third on a sacrifice fly, but Flores kept Pace ahead 2-1 heading into the fifth.

As they did in the opener, the Mercy offense came to life in the fifth inning with an eight-run effort. Pace was unable to answer in the bottom half as the Mavericks completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-2 win.

Up Next
With inclement weather in the forecast for Wednesday, Pace's scheduled doubleheader against the University of New Haven has been postponed. The Setters hope to return to action on Thursday with a pair of contests at Dominican College beginning at 3 p.m.
