WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Pace University men's basketball team was defeated at the University of New Haven on Tuesday night by a final score of 81-68.
Inside the Numbers
*The freshmen backcourt of
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) and
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) led the way for the Setters, combining for 38 points. Gilbertson put in 18 of his 20 points in the second half, while Jacobs finished the contest with 18.
*Junior
Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) also reached double figures for the Blue and Gold, tallying 14 points.
Kevin Smith (New Haven, CT/South Kent) led the Setters with eight rebounds and two steals, while also adding nine points.
*As a team, Pace shot 43 percent from the field (24-of-56) and 32 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-22).
*New Haven did most of their damage from three-point range, finishing the game 15-of-37 from distance.
How it Happened
New Haven's hot shooting started from the get-go as the Chargers knocked in their first two three-pointers of the game to quickly jump out to a 6-0 lead. They would go on to make two more in consecutive fashion to extend the edge to 16-7, and then once again to go up 22-10. Poleon would answer the three-point barrage with one of his own to cut the lead to 25-17 at the 6:02 mark. Following Poleon's long ball, the Chargers rattled off seven points in a row to gain their biggest lead of the half at 32-17. Pace would go on to end the half on a 9-4 run to make it a 10-point halftime deficit.
More accurate shooting from New Haven set the tone in the second half. The Chargers put in a three-pointer on their opening possession, setting the stage for a 45-point second half for the home team. The lowest Pace would cut the deficit after halftime would be 41-32 following a Smith layup. New Haven answered with an 8-2 run to go back up 15 with 16 minutes remaining. The Chargers kept the pressure on from there, never leading by less than 10 the rest of the way.
