SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Highlighted by their best defensive performance of the season, the Pace University men's basketball team earned a 56-53 victory at Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon. The Setters have now won five games in a row, and stand at 6-2 overall this season.
Pace, which currently ranks first in the NE10 in scoring defense, limited the defending conference champions to just 18-of-57 shooting (31.6%) on Saturday, including a 7-for-31 effort from three-point land. The Setters also racked up seven steals in the game, and forced 13 Dolphins turnovers.
Pace's defense was especially impressive in the second half, as Le Moyne managed to make just eight of its 28 field-goal attempts after halftime.
Up 54-53 with 18 seconds remaining, the Blue and Gold were able to make a pair of defensive stops to secure the road win. The Setters also capitalized on a technical foul given to Le Moyne with just six seconds on the clock. After
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) knocked in a pair of free throws to give Pace a 56-53 lead, the Setters made one final stand as time expired in the contest.
Jacobs served as Pace's top offensive performer, putting in a game-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He also added five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Jacobs has now scored in double figures in seven of Pace's eight games this season. He has also dished out at least three assists in every contest.
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional),
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) and
Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) joined Jacobs in double figures, combining to score 34 points between the three of them. Poleon also grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds to register his first double-double of the season.
The Setters' starting five accounted for 53 of their 56 total points on Saturday. Wejnert, Jacobs and Poleon have now each been in double figures in five-straight games.
