WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Pace University men's basketball team battled back from a nine-point, first-half deficit to earn a 57-52 win at New Haven on Tuesday night. The victory was the Setters' sixth in a row, and improves their record to 7-2 this season (4-1, NE10).
Pace's defense was once again the impetus for victory on Tuesday. New Haven's 52 points was its lowest total this season as the Chargers shot just 3-of-26 (.115) from the beyond the three-point line. The Setters also forced 17 turnovers, which marked another season-high for the Chargers.
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) continued his stellar sophomore year with yet another terrific outing in leading the Pace offense. The second-year guard recorded team-highs in almost every statistical category, tallying 20 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) and
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) helped out the Pace attack with 12 points apiece while
Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, NY/Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) chipped in seven of his own. Senior
Luke McLaughlin (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) led the Setters in the rebound department with seven.
Up by two at halftime, Pace used a 15-6 run to begin the second half to gain the necessary separation from New Haven. A three-pointer from Jacobs capped off the stretch at the 13:29 mark to give Pace a 41-30 lead.
Jacobs would strike again with back-to-back baskets under the five-minute mark to put the Setters back up by 11 with 4:02 left in the game.
The Blue and Gold's 7-2 record is their best start to a season since the 2004-05 campaign.
