DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Shooting a season-best 50 percent from the field, the Pace University men's basketball team secured their third consecutive win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Mercy College 70-55. The Setters' first road win of the year moves Pace's overall record to 4-2 on the young season.
The Setters were led offensively by four starters that reached double figures.
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) led the attack with 19 points, his third straight game with 10 or more points and his fifth in Pace's six games.
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) shot six-of-eight on two-point field-goal attempts as he scored 14.
Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) added 13 points on a five-for-nine day from the field, while
Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, NY/Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College) matched his season-high with 10 points. Helping orchestrate the Pace offense was
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity), who recorded a team-best five assists.
Pace outrebounded Mercy, 39-23, in the contest. Poleon led the Blue and Gold effort with nine boards, three coming on the offensive glass. Wejnert, Pace's leading rebounder in the season, added eight boards to his season total.
Despite shooting just 2-of-15 from beyond the arc, the Setters were able to take control of the contest with the team's best shooting performance both from the field and at the free-throw line of the year. The Blue and Gold connected on 14-of-18 attempts from the charity stripe, led by Wejnert's 7-for-9 statline.
A back-and-forth affair through the opening ten-plus minutes, Pace was able to snag momentum late in the first half. A 17-0 Setters run over a four-minute span put Pace ahead 34-15 with 4:30 left in the opening half. The 19-point advantage would end up being the Setters' biggest of the day, as the Mavericks cut down the lead to 14 at the half, 38-24.
The double-figure lead proved to be too much for Mercy to fight back from. The Mavericks pulled to within single figures twice, fighting back to a seven-point deficit with 6:45 left on the clock. While the deep ball was off target all day, Poleon was able to connect on a three with just under six minutes remaining to regain a double-digit lead, 55-45. From there, the Setters outscored Mercy 15-10 in the closing six minutes to win 70-55.
