Pace Men's Basketball Defeated at Adelphi, 84-74

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Facing an NE10 opponent for the first time in the young season, the Pace University men's basketball team was defeated by Adelphi University on Wednesday night by a score of 84-74.

It was a tale of two halves in the Setters' first road contest of the season. Pace put together a 33-13 run in the opening 20 minutes, turning a nine-point deficit into a 37-26 lead at the 3:13 mark. Sophomore Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) served as the catalyst for the Blue and Gold in the first half, scoring 19 of his career-best 26 points.

Pace's defense was also a large reason for the opening-half success as they held Adelphi to 40-percent shooting in the opening 20, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc.

The Setters took a seven-point lead into the break before stretching their advantage to 11 points at 16:22 of the second half. Adelphi answered with a 12-0 run to take their first lead since mid-way in the first half. Then with the score tied at 69-69 with 6:54 left in the game, the Panthers rattled off a 9-2 run to take control of the game down the stretch.

Jacobs' career-best output was done extremely efficiently as he knocked in nine of his 14 attempts from the field, including 4-of-6 from long range. Jacobs also chipped in five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) joined his backcourt partner in double figures with 15 points, while also matching his five assists.

Tyrone Cohen, Jr. (Woodside, NY/Christ the King / Holy Cross University / Broward College), Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) and Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional) supplemented the Setters offense, each recording nine points. Poleon served as the Setters' leading rebounder (8), while Wejnert led Pace in the steals department with three.
