How it Happened
Three-point shooting told the story for the Blue and Gold in the first quarter as they knocked in five long balls in the first 10 minutes. A long ball from Monteleone provided a 5-4 lead while another from
Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining) tied the game at 8-8. Pace would go on to knock in back-to-back three-pointers to close out the first quarter—the first by Rubin to take an 18-16 lead, and the final one by Italee Brown Smikle to give the Setters a 21-18 edge at the break.
Although Pace's shooting wasn't quite as red-hot in the second quarter, it was another back-and-forth battle. AIC re-took the lead at 25-23 before manufacturing ties at 27-27, and then 29-29. From there, Pace was able to find some separation, putting together an 11-3 run to take their largest lead of the game at 40-32 with less than two minutes remaining. AIC responded, however, closing the half on a 7-0 run to go into the break down by just one.
The Setters' long-range attack returned after halftime. Brown Smikle put Pace up 47-43 with a three-pointer while a back-to-back three-balls from Olikhver provided the Blue and Gold with a 56-49 lead at the 1:50 mark. AIC would score the final three points of the frame to trim the edge to just four heading to the final quarter.
The Yellow Jackets continued to nip at Pace's heels in the fourth quarter—and even took their first lead since early in the second quarter. An 8-3 stretch from the visitors put them ahead 62-61 with 3:12 left in regulation. After back-to-back free throws from Monteleone put Pace back on top, she then followed with a three-pointer to give Pace a 66-62 lead at the 1:35 mark. From there, the Setters had a layup from Rubin followed by a final 10-for-10 stretch from the free-throw line to close the door on AIC.
