PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Led by a career-high 20 points from
Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis), the Pace University women's basketball team defeated Saint Anselm College on Wednesday night in come-from-behind fashion, 67-62. With the win, the Setters improve to 10-8 on the year with a 7-4 mark in conference play.
Inside the Numbers
*With 20 points, Rosalbo finished the night as the leading scorer for the Setters while setting a new personal best on the offensive end. The senior captain surpassed her previous high of 19 points set last season by shooting 58 percent from the field, including two-of-four on three pointers.
*
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) finished right behind Rosalbo with 18 points against the Hawks. Shooting .727 from the field on Wednesday night, the junior guard has now posted double figures in the scoring column in four of Pace's last five games while leading the Blue and Gold with 12.8 points per game this season.
*Rounding out the top scorers was
Jackie DelliSanti (Commack, NY/Commack), another familiar star to the Pace offense. The sophomore guard scored 11 points for the third straight contest, bringing her average to 12.0 points per game. DelliSanti was also the leading playmaker on the glass for the Blue and Gold with seven rebounds to bring her season total to an even 100, while adding a block and a pair of steals on defense.
*Freshman
Naya Rivera (Pomona, NY/North Rockland) also was a big factor under the net, setting a new career high in rebounds with six. Rivera's classmate
Lauren Schetter (Beacon, NY/Beacon High School) added five boards to her season total.
*The Setters' defense was able to prevent getting hurt by the longball, holding Saint Anselm to a lone three pointer on the night. Pace was also able to contain the Hawks' leading scorer and rebounder Shannon Ryan effectively, holding the sophomore forward below her season averages in both categories.
*The Blue and Gold turned the ball over just eight times, a new season low. Through effective ball movement and control, Pace was able to complete the fourth-quarter comeback.
How it Happened
The Setters and Hawks matched each other shot for shot in the opening quarter, playing to ties on four separate occasions. Neither team was able to take a lead of more than three points, with the Hawks claiming the largest separation of the quarter at 12-9 with just under two minutes remaining. A basket from Schetter and a free thrown courtesy of
Kristina Olikhver (Moscow, Russia/Saint Andrew's) were the only points scored in the remainder of the quarter to end the first tied at 12-12.
It was more of the same throughout the second, as while the offenses were able to finally break the single-possession leads, the opposition had an immediate response. Pace opened the period with five unanswered points over the opening two minutes to take their largest lead of the half at 17-12. Saint Anselm responded with a 9-0 run over the ensuing two and a half minutes to claim a 21-17 advantage. After playing to two more deadlocks in the half, Pace struck last with a layup from DelliSanti with 10 ticks left on the clock to send the Blue and Gold into the half up 29-27.
The Hawks were able to adjust their game plan in the third, outscoring the Setters 22-15 in the quarter to control momentum to open up the second half. With both teams scoring four points apiece in the first two and a half minutes, Saint Anselm went on an 8-3 run to go up 39-36, holding the lead for the remaining five minutes of the quarter. The Hawks would go up by as much as seven in the third, and headed into the final frame of regulation up 49-44.
Pace was unable to pull any closer over the opening five minutes of the fourth, as the Hawks immediately answered Setter baskets with points of their own. Trailing 59-54 with under four minutes to play, the Setters began their comeback run, outscoring the Hawks 13-3 over the remainder of regulation to earn the win. Rosalbo capped off her career night with eight of Pace's final 13 points to complete the comeback and end the Setters' night with a hard-fought victory.
