MANCHESTER, N.H. – The eighth-ranked Pace University field hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday, falling 2-1 in overtime at No. 5 Saint Anselm College. The Setters move to 6-1 on the season, while the Hawks improve their record to 7-0.
With both teams entering the day undefeated and ranked in the NFHCA top-ten, it seemed appropriate that the contest would go down to the wire.
Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) scored with just 32 ticks on the clock to tie the score at 1-1, and force the game into extra time. The junior's first tally of the season—which came on Pace's lone shot of the contest—was off a corner from junior
Rebecca Kauffman (Mount Joy, PA/Linden Hall). Junior
Jenna Sanossian (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) also earned an assist on the play.
Mia Vecchione scored the game-winner for the home team at 3:21 of extra time. Vecchione was also a part of the Hawks' first goal, assisting Hannah Friend in the 23
rd minute of the contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, CT/Stamford) made five saves for Pace in her first loss of the season. Senior defender
Margaret Maclean (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) recorded her fourth defensive save of the season in the beginning of the second half to keep the Setters within a goal.
