Pace Volleyball Knocks Off Molloy, 3-0

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Led by a season-best .245 hitting percentage, the Pace University volleyball team earned a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-17, 32-30) over Molloy College on Friday night inside the Goldstein Fitness Center. The win marked the Setters' third of the season, and just the second loss suffered by the visiting Lions (12-2).

Inside the Numbers
Junior Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) notched her third double-double in the last four matches with 14 kills and 17 digs. She also added a pair of services aces. Senior Sydney Lecker (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) and sophomore Tatjana Calimpong-Burke (Waianae, HI/Iolani) nearly joined in with double-doubles of their own, recording nine kills apiece and combining for 21 digs.

Natalia Quinones and Elien Peeters (Herdersem, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwecollege) each tallied six put-aways while also combining for five blocks. Sophomore setter Samantha Nidini (Houston, TX/Clearlake) put together her best match of the season, dishing out a season-high 34 assists in just three sets of action. Sophomore libero Danielle Vaiano (Seaford, NY/St. Anthony's) racked up 15 digs.

How it Happened
The home team came out red-hot in the opening frame, registering just two errors on the way to a dominant 25-14 win. Calimpong-Burk and Fontanet each had four kills for a Pace squad that made just two errors, and hit an impressive .467.

The Blue and Gold rode the momentum into a decisive second-set win as well, 25-17. Pace broke open a 9-9 score with five straight points, before closing the game on a 9-3 run. Fontanet led the way with six more put-aways while Vaiano picked up 10 digs.

The third set provided much more drama as Pace thwarted off eight set points before finally closing the door, 32-30. In fact, the Setters were down by as many as seven (22-15) in the final frame before mounting a furious comeback. Fontanet recorded the final five points for the Blue and Gold, including back-to-back aces to end it.
