Keenan Nets Winner as No. 4 Pace Men’s Lacrosse Claims OT Victory over No. 5 Saint Anselm in NE10 First Round

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Daniel Keenan (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) ripped home the game-winning goal 52 seconds into overtime, sending the No. 4-seed Pace University men's lacrosse team to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Semifinals after defeating No. 5 Saint Anselm College, 12-11, Tuesday evening in the NE10 First Round at Pace Stadium. The win is Pace's first postseason victory since 2004.
 
FIRST QUARTER
- Junior Liam Brennan (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) got on the board just 27 seconds into the game to give the Setters a quick 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Bradley Paterson (Caldwell, NJ/Depaul Catholic) made it 2-0 at the 13:28 mark with his first of the evening.
- Junior Michael Pappalardo (Ossining, NY/Ossining) scurried around the net and fired one past the keeper at 10:16 to make it a three-goal lead early on for the Setters.
- Junior Joshua Kreitler (Shelton, CT/Shelton) took a feed from Brennan right in front of the net, and beat the keeper low to put the Setters up, 4-0.
 
SECOND QUARTER
- Paterson netted his second of the game just 42 second into the second frame, pushing Pace's lead to five.
- Saint Anselm ended the shutout with 10:52 left in the second.
- The Hawks scored again at the 9:04 mark when Patrick Sweeney followed up a ground ball for a goal to cut the deficit to three.
- Sophomore Matthew Simone (Seaford, NY/Seaford) halted Saint Anselm's short streak when he scored at the 7:39 mark to put Pace back up by four.
- The Hawks dropped Pace's lead back to three when Anthony Busconi fired one in to make it a three-goal game.
- James Olsen scored again for the Hawks with 3:30 left in the half to make it a two-goal game.
 
THIRD QUARTER
- Busconi scored the first goal of the second half at the 10:10 mark, cutting Pace's lead to just one goal.
- Xavier Quinn then tied the game for the Hawks at the 6:40 mark.
- Brennan Quackenbush then won the ensuing faceoff, crossed the restraining line, and fired low and into the net to give the Hawks their first lead at 7-6 with 6:34 left in the third.
- Paterson responded with his third goal, a man-up score at the 5:40 mark off a dish from Brennan, to tie the game at 7-7.
- Kreitler scored again to put the Setters ahead, 8-7, but Ryan Hesseltine scored for the Hawks shortly after to tie it up at 8-8.
- Mark Vitello then gave the Hawks the lead again with just 16 seconds left in the third.
- Kreitler quickly tied the game again with the clock reading 2.7, sending the game to the fourth tied up, 9-9.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
- Busconi put the Hawks in the lead again early in the fourth, but Kreitler quickly responded with a shot behind his back that beat the keeper, tying the game at 10-10.
- Matt Johnson scored in traffic for the Hawks at the 9:21 mark to put them back up, 11-10.
- After Saint Anselm's Vitello took an illegal crosse penalty at the 7:35 mark, Pace tied the game just a minute later when Paterson scored once again to make it an 11-11 game.
 
OVERTIME
- The Setters were given a man-up opportunity to start overtime after two Saint Anselm players took simultaneous slashing penalties with one second left in regulation.
- At the 3:08 mark, Keenan blasted one into the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Kevin Vogelsberg (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan), sparking the celebration as the Setters picked up the thrilling overtime victory.
 
GOALIE DECISIONS
Win: Robert Beshlian (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) (12-2)
Loss: Lucas DeAngelo (8-6)
 
Goalkeeper Notes
- Beshlian stopped 15 shots to earn his 12th and most important victory of the season.
 
SETTER STATS
- Keenan scored the overtime winner, and added an assist for a two-point evening.
- Paterson scored four times and dished out an assist for a five-point game.
- Kreitler netted four goals and picked up three ground balls.
- Brennan totaled three points on a goal and two assists, adding three ground balls.
- Sophomore Steven Weindler (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) won 18-of-26 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 14 ground balls.
- Senior Brandon Donnellan (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) caused three turnovers and scooped up three ground balls.
 
HAWK LEADERS
- Busconi led the visitors with four points on three goals and an assist, also adding six ground balls.
- Matt Johnson scored twice, while James Olsen had a goal and an assist for two points.
- Quackenbush scored once and picked up five ground balls.
- Derrick LaBranche had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

WHAT'S NEXT?
- The Setters advance to the NE10 Championship Semifinals and will take on top-seeded Adelphi University on Friday, May 5, at 7 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
