Pace Softball Drops Two at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Pace University softball team dropped a pair of cross-divisional contests to Bentley University at the Bentley Softball Field on Sunday. The Setters fell in a close opener, 2-1, and dropped Game 2, 3-1.
 
GAME 1: BENTLEY 2, PACE 1
SCORING PLAYS
Top 1st – Pace
- Junior shortstop Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) led off the game with a walk, then stole second, and was quickly moved to third on a passed ball.
- Senior second baseman Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) then walked and stole second base to move two runners into scoring position.
- Lew then managed to score on a sacrifice fly to the second baseman by freshman left fielder Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy), putting the Setters ahead, 1-0.
 
Bottom 1st – Bentley
- Shorstop Catie Noons led off the first with a single for Bentley.
- Left fielder Kelsey Kennedy then singled to center, moving Noons over to third to put runners on the corners with one away.
- First baseman Stacey Korotsky later singled in Noons to tie the game up at 1-1.
 
Bottom 7th – Bentley
- With a runner on first and two away, Noons reached on an error, allowing Sami Palazzolo to come all the way around to score and end the game.
 
GAME 1 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Hannah King (4-7)
Loss: Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (5-4)
 
Pitching Notes
- Senior pitcher Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) gave up just one earned run on five hits in 6.2 frames while striking out four batters.
- Bentley starter Hannah King allowed a run on four hits while striking out seven.
 
GAME 1 SETTER STATS
- Hernandez hit 1-for-2 with a double, while senior catcher Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) batted 1-for-3 with Pace's other two-bagger.
- Gartner knocked in Pace's only run despite hitting 0-for-2.
- Junior right fielder Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) went 1-for-3 while freshman center fielder Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) hit 1-for-2.
 
GAME 1 FALCON LEADERS
- Korotsky finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Noons batted 1-for-4 with a run scored.
 
 
GAME 2: BENTLEY 3, PACE 1
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 3rd – Bentley
- Third baseman Stephanie McQuaid reached on an error, and was able to advance to second on the play.
- Designated player Julie Slavin then got on base on another error, scoring McQuaid to put the home team up, 1-0.
 
Bottom 5th – Bentley
- With a runner on second and two down, Kennedy doubled to left, scoring Noons to make it a 2-0 game.
- Slavin then tripled to center, scoring Kenney to give Bentley a 3-0 advantage.
 
Top 6th – Pace
- Hernandez slammed a triple to center to lead off the sixth.
- Senior designated player Samantha Lima (Brawley, CA/Saddleback College) then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Hernandez to get the Setters on the board.
 
GAME 2 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Hannah King (5-7)
Loss: Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) (4-4)
 
Pitching Notes
- Junior pitcher Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) allowed just two earned runs across six innings on four hits. She also struck out four batters.
- King took over in the third for Bentley, and earned her second win of the day after giving up just one run in five innings.
 
GAME 2 SETTER STATS
- Hernandez batted 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored.
- Lima hit 1-for-2 with an RBI.
- Chillinsky and junior left fielder Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) both went 1-for-3.
 
GAME 2 FALCON LEADERS
- Kennedy went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.
- Slavin hit 1-for-2 with an RBI triple.
