Pace Softball Splits Doubleheader with New Haven

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team split a Northeast-10 Southwest divisional doubleheader with the University of New Haven at Pace Field in Briarcliff on Tuesday. The Setters won the opening game by a score of 6-3 before the Chargers took game two 4-1.
 
GAME 1: PACE 6, NEW HAVEN 3
SCORING PLAYS
Top 2nd – Pace
- After a scoreless first inning, junior center fielder Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) led off the second frame by reaching on an error and advanced to second on the throw.
- Lew stole third base and was promptly driven in by senior catcher Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) who ripped a single to left field.
- Later in the inning, sophomore third baseman Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) scored on a base hit off the bat of junior shortstop Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) and an infield throwing error.
 
Bottom 2nd – New Haven
- New Haven bounced back in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on only one hit.
- Gabby DeLeo, Erin Stever, and Sierra Whitlock drew back-to-back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases.
- Catherine Vaughan followed with a two-run double down the right field line to knot the game at 2-2.
- Julie Devlin's sacrifice fly to center field plated Whitlock to give the Chargers a 3-2 lead.
 
Top 4th – Pace
- Sophomore first baseman Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) led off the fourth inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ah Soon.
- Freshman left fielder Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) followed with a single to left field, driving in Carberry to even the score at 3-3.
- Lew drew a walk to give Pace a pair of base runners and two batters later, senior designated player Samantha Lima (Brawley, CA/Saddleback College) singled to left center to knock them both in and put the Setters ahead 5-3.
 
Top 6th – Pace
- After Lew singled with one out in the sixth inning, senior second baseman Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) moved her to third on a double to center field.
- Lima was next, belting a sacrifice fly to center field and scoring Lew for some insurance to give Pace a 6-3 lead it would hold on to.

Win: Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) (3-3)
Loss: Megan Butts (11-4)
 
Pitching Notes
- Freshman pitcher Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) earned her third win of the year for Pace by tossing 5.2 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts.
- New Haven starter Megan Butts went 3.2 innings for the Chargers, allowing three earned runs, and Alyssa Monteverde gave New Haven 3.1 innings of two-hit relief, yielding just one earned run.
 
 
GAME 1 SETTER STATS
- Lew was a perfect 3-for-3 and added a walk to reach base safely in all four plate appearances.
- Lima was 1-for-3 with three RBI
- Wang went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored
 
GAME 1 CHARGER LEADERS
- Vaughan and Whitlock had the only hits in the game for New Haven
- Vaughan drove in a pair of runs and Devlin pushed across the other Charger run
 
 
GAME 2: NEW HAVEN 4, PACE 1
SCORING PLAYS
Top 2nd – New Haven
- Kristine Liptack gave the Chargers a one-out single in the top of the second.
- Tori Schiebe came up next and delivered a two-run home run to left field to give New Haven a 2-0 lead.
 
Top 4th - New Haven
- After a scoreless third inning, DeLeo walked to lead off the fourth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
- Vaughan followed with a single to right and two batters later, Taylor Luzzi tripled down the right field line to give the Chargers a 4-0 advantage.
 
Bottom 4th – Pace
- The Setters got one back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 4-1
- Lima got things started with a double that bounced over the left-center field fence.
- Junior right fielder Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) was then hit by a pitch and two batters later Larm drew a walk to load the bases.
- Freshman Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) came up as a pinch hitter and reached on an error that also allowed Lima to score the final run of the game.
 
GAME 2 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Kylie Stonebraker (7-4) 
Loss: Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) (4-5)
 
Pitching Notes
- Junior pitcher Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) went the distance for Pace, allowing just five hits and striking out three batters.
- Kylie Stonebraker tossed a complete game two-hitter with no earned runs and 10 strikeouts to notch her seventh win of the season
 
GAME 2 SETTER STATS
- Lima and Wang each went 1-for-3 for Pace with Lima scoring the Setters' run.
 
GAME 2 CHARGER LEADERS
- Kristine Liptack was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Chargers.
- Luzzi went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
- Schiebe had a 1-for-3 game with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

- The split gives the Setters an important series win, taking two of three from their divisional foe before heading into another stretch of seven straight NE10 Southwest Division games, beginning with a three-game set at Le Moyne on Friday and Saturday.
