Pace Softball Celebrates Seniors, Falls Twice to STAC

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team honored its four seniors prior to the start of its non-conference doubleheader with Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) Friday afternoon at Pace Field. The Setters fell in both games, dropping a 6-5 decision in Game 1, and a 3-1 decision in Game 2.
 
GAME 1: STAC 6, PACE 5
SCORING PLAYS
Top 2nd – STAC
- With first baseman Briana Keaveney on first after a walk, designated player Brittany Malloy dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt. On the play, Keaveney tried to take third, and the throw trying to get her advancing went out of play, allowing her to score and put the Spartans ahead, 1-0.
 
Bottom 2nd – Pace
- Junior center fielder Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) ripped a double to left with one away, and was quickly brought in to score on an RBI single by senior catcher Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster), tying the game at 1-1.
- Sophomore first baseman Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) then doubled to right, scoring Larm from second to put Pace ahead, 2-1.
- A single by sophomore third baseman Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) put runners on the corners, junior shortstop Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) blooped a single into center, scoring Carberry to give the Setters a 3-1 lead.
 
Top 4th – STAC
- With the bases loaded, right fielder Valerie Winalski drew a walk to get STAC back within a run.
- Center fielder Melissa Sadler then doubled to right-center, bringing in two more runs to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead.
- Third baseman Amanda Schweitzer later singled in another run to leave the visitors ahead, 5-3.
 
Bottom 5th – Pace
- Senior catcher Samantha Lima (Brawley, CA/Saddleback College) led off the fifth with a solo homer to left, getting Pace back within one.
 
Top 6th – STAC
- Schweitzer picked up another RBI after knocking in a run on a single down the right field line to give STAC a two-run advantage.
 
Bottom 6th – Pace
- With two down, senior second baseman Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) doubled to the wall in right-center to keep the inning going.
- Junior Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) then came in to pinch hit, and pulled through with an RBI single to left-center, getting the Setters back within a run at 6-5.
 
GAME 1 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Julie Sosnicki (6-14)
Loss: Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (7-7)
Save: Briana Keaveney (1)
 
GAME 1 SETTER STATS
- Lima hit 2-for-4 with a solo homer.
- Larm went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
- Hernandez hit two doubles in a 2-for-4 outing, scoring a run.
- Carberry batted 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a double.
- Labs finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
 
GAME 1 SPARTAN LEADERS
- Schweitzer knocked in two runs after going 2-for-4.
- Sadler hit 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
 
GAME 2: STAC 3, PACE 1
SCORING PLAYS
Top 1st – STAC
- With Sadler on first, Schweitzer hit a double to right-center, bringing in STAC's first run of the game.
 
Bottom 1st – Pace
- Labs led off the game for Pace with a single, and was quickly knocked in on an RBI double by Hernandez, tying the game at 1-1.
 
Top 4th – STAC
- Shortstop Ashley Landolina hit a solo homer in the fourth to give STAC a 2-1 lead.
 
Top 7th – STAC
- With runners on second and third, Sadler hit an RBI single to right, upping STAC's lead to 3-1.
 
GAME 2 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Colleen Borum (11-8)
Loss: Emma Bernet (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W Baker) (5-6)
 
GAME 2 SETTER STATS
- Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Labs batted 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Bernstein and freshman left fielder Tara Bernstein (Glen Oaks, NY/Bayside High School) each hit 1-for-3.
 
GAME 2 SPARTAN LEADERS
- Schweitzer finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
- Landolina went 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
- Sadler batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
