Pace Softball Drops Two at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Pace University softball team fell in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at New York Institute of Technology on Thursday. The Setters fell, 2-0, in Game 1, and dropped a 3-1 decision in the finale.
 
GAME 1: NYIT 2, PACE 0
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 4th – NYIT
- First baseman Brooke Scherer led off with a single through the left side.
- Right fielder Christine Olivas followed with a walk, and then both runners were sacrificed into scoring position.
- Left fielder Christine Rizzacasa capitalized with a two-RBI double to left to put NYIT ahead, 2-0, but was thrown out trying to take third on the play.
 
GAME 1 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Laura McLaughlin (14-4)
Loss: Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (6-5)
 
Pitching Notes
- Senior pitcher Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) gave up just two runs on six hits, but was shouldered with the loss.
 
GAME 1 SETTER STATS
- Senior second baseman Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) hit 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
- Junior center fielder Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) went 1-for-2, as did freshman left fielder Stephanie Wang (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia).
 
GAME 1 BEAR LEADERS
- Rizzacasa hit 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double.
- Second baseman Kaitlyn Lanksbury went 2-for-2 with a double.
- Scherer and Olivas each scored a run for the Bears.
 
GAME 2: NYIT 3, PACE 1
SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 4th – NYIT
- Designated player Josephine Santagata led off the fourth with a single for the Bears.
- Lanksbury then doubled to center, putting both runners in scoring position.
- Catcher Madison Smith singled up the middle, bringing in both runners to put NYIT ahead, 2-0.
 
Top 5th – Pace
- Sophomore catcher Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) walked with one away.
- She was then sacrificed over to second, and was later brought in to score on an RBI triple for Wang down the right-field line, getting the Setters back within a run.
 
Bottom 6th – NYIT
- Lanksbury hit a solo homer to make it a 3-1 game.
 
GAME 2 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win: Ashley Russo (5-5)
Loss: Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) (5-6)
Save: Laura McLaughlin (1)
 
Pitching Notes
- Junior pitcher Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) tossed all six innings, giving up three runs on just four hits with four strikeouts.
 
GAME 2 SETTER STATS
- Wang finished 1-for-2 with an RBI triple.
- Ah Soon scored a run after going 0-for-1 with a walk.
- Junior right fielder Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) batted 1-for-3.
- Sophomore Brianna Parks (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) hit a double in a pinch-hit opportunity in the seventh.
 
GAME 2 BEAR LEADERS
- Lanksbury finished 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a home run and a double.
- Smith went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
