PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team picked up the three-game weekend sweep of American International College (AIC) after picking up two more wins over its Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division foe on Saturday at Peter X. Finnerty Field. Pace claimed Game 1 by a score of 3-2, and followed that with a 3-1 victory in the series finale.
GAME 1: PACE 3, AIC 2
SCORING PLAYS
Top 4th – AIC
- Designated hitter Mike Wroth got the scoring started with an RBI single to right field, giving the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
- Later, catcher Eugene Quirk reached on an error, bringing in AIC's second run of the inning.
Bottom 4th – Pace
- Senior first baseman
Garrett De Lotto (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) walked to lead off the fourth for Pace.
- Junior left fielder
Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) then beat out an infield single to second.
- Senior designated hitter
Domenick Luongo (Darien, CT/Cardinal Spellman) reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt, allowing De Lotto to score and get Pace within a run.
- Senior right fielder
Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) then legged out a single to second base, scoring Gulino to tie the game.
- Senior catcher
Frank Mayo (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) then hit a grounder off the pitcher, and was thrown out by the third baseman, but managed to bring in Luongo to give the Setters a 3-2 lead.

Pitching Notes
- Junior starter
Ryan Aquino (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck) went the complete nine innings in Game 1, striking out six batters and allowing just one earned run on five hits.
- AIC starter Cam Winiarz tossed six frames, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

- Mayo hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double in the win.
- Gulino went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
- Senior center fielder
John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) batted 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
- Capaldi knocked in a run after going 1-for-3.

SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 2nd – Pace
- Luongo reached on an error with one away, and then Capaldi also reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman to put two runners on.
- With runners on the corners, Capaldi took off for second, and got in a rundown, allowing Luongo to score before he was tagged out to give Pace a 1-0 lead.
Top 3rd – AIC
- Second baseman Travis Seymour drew a walk with one out, and then advanced to second on a ground out.
- Center fielder Josh Aviles knocked him in with a single to left-center, tying the game at 1-1.
Bottom 7th – Pace
- Gulino and Luongo kicked off the seventh with back-to-back singles.
- Capaldi then reached on an error while attempting a sacrifice bunt to load the bases.
- Mayo hit a long fly ball that would have landed over the left-field fence, but the left fielder leaped and reached over the wall, grabbing the ball for the out. Gulino was still able to score on the sacrifice fly, putting the Setters in the lead, 2-1.
Bottom 8th – Pace
- Kukura drew a walk with one away, and later stole second base.
- De Lotto then doubled down the right-field line, scoring Kukura to give Pace a 3-1 lead.

Dan Wirchansky (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland/RCC) came on in the eighth to finish the game, yielding just one hit with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save.
