CLERMONT, Fla. – A pair of dominant pitching performances by junior
Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) and senior
Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) lifted the Pace University softball team to a doubleheader sweep in Northeast-10 Conference action against Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Friday afternoon at Legends Way 3 as part of the PFX Spring Games. The Setters were victorious in Game 1 with a 2-1 decision, and then completed the sweep with a 4-0 shutout in the finale.
GAME 1: PACE 2, SCSU 1
SCORING PLAYS
Top 1st – SCSU
- With two away, left fielder Arianna Medeiros hit a triple to keep the inning going, and then second baseman Giuliana D'Arcangelo brought her in on an infield single, giving the Owls a quick 1-0 lead.
Bottom 4th – Pace
- Sophomore third baseman
Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) kept the inning alive with a two-out walk.
- Freshman designated player
Jillian Gartner (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) then doubled to left, scoring Ah Soon all the way from first to tie things up at 1-1.
Bottom 5th – Pace
- Junior right fielder
Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) led off the fifth with a double to left-center.
- Chillinsky was then able to come all the way around to score on an error by the catcher to give Pace a 2-1 lead and the final run of the game.

Pitching Notes
- Flores went the complete seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out two batters to pick up the win.
- Victoria Ceballos went six innings for SCSU, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk
GAME 1 SETTER STATS
- Gartner hit 2-for-3 with a double and Pace's only RBI of Game 1.
- Chillinsky batted 2-for-2 with a double and scored the game-winning run.
GAME 1 OWL LEADERS
- D'Arcangelo finished 2-for-3 with SCSU's lone RBI.
- Medeiros went 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

Bottom 1st – Pace
- The Setters got off to a quick start when junior shortstop
Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) opened the game with a single to center.
- Lew then stole second and third, making it easy for her to score on junior center fielder
Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School)' double to left, putting Pace ahead, 1-0.
Bottom 4th – Pace
- Sophomore first baseman
Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) reached base on an error with one away.
- Gartner then singled to center to put two runners on.
- Freshman third baseman
Emma Schafer (Mission Viejo, CA/El Toro) then blasted a three-run homer, the first of her young career, giving Pace a 4-0 advantage.
GAME 2 PITCHING DECISIONS
Win:
Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (2-2)
Loss: Yesenia Evaristo (1-3)
Pitching Notes
- After a solid start on Wednesday, Nelson one-upped herself on Friday, giving up just two hits and no runs while striking out eight batters across the complete seven innings to get the win.
- Yesenia Evaristo went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits.
GAME 2 SETTER STATS
- Schafer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored on her three-run homer.
- Lew hit 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two stolen bases.
- Gartner batted 1-for-2 with a run scored.
- Labs finished 1-for-2 with a double and the game-winning RBI.
GAME 2 OWL LEADERS
- Third baseman Sara Buscetto and pinch hitter Zoe Fanolis accounted for the only two hits of the game for the Owls.

- Pace finishes up its trip to Clermont, Fla. on Saturday, March 18, when the Setters take on Concordia University-St. Paul in their final contest of the PFX Spring Games. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
