Enjoying their third season at Pace Stadium, the football team put together their most successful year at home since 2002. The Setters picked up three wins in front of the Blue and Gold faithful, kicking off the year with a 28-20 victory over Millersville University on Sept. 2. Pace earned their second win of the season two weeks later in a thrilling 24-23 contest against American International College on Sept. 15.
The Setters had their biggest triumph of the season on Sept. 30, defeating Bentley University by a final of 20-17. The win improved Pace's home record to a perfect 3-0 to start the season, while handing the Falcons their first conference loss of the year. The hard-fought victory was a full team effort, featuring a game-high 139 yards and a touchdown by
Jhalen Bien-Aime (Dorchester, MA/Bridgton Academy), a fake punt to set up Bien-Aime's score, a fake field goal touchdown from
Brandon Simmons (Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross Academy) to
Prince Unaegbu (Boston, MA/Brighton), and two fumbles and an interception by defensive back
B'Jon Couther (San Lorenzo, CA/San Lorenzo). Couther and punter
Nick Fountis (Bellport, NY/Bellport) were honored by the ECAC as Defensive Player and Special Teams Player of the Week respectively for their contributions in the victory.
Bien-Aime was a force offensively all season long for the Setters, leading all NE10 rushers with 104.5 yards per game. The Massachusetts native ended the season as the program leader for most yards in a season, racking up 1,040 yards on the ground and scoring seven touchdowns. Bien-Aime posted five games of 100 yards or more rushing, including a four-game streak from Sept. 8 to Sept. 30.
Members of the Blue and Gold were awarded multiple honors throughout the season for their stellar play. Bien-Aime was named ECAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 for his performance against AIC, where he posted a season-high 170 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Senior linebacker
Matthew Corrie (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), who led the NE10 in tackles (87) and forced fumbles (3), was also honored by the ECAC as their Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26. Corrie recorded 12 tackles against New Haven on Sept. 23 while forcing and recovering a fumble to earn the award.
Corrie and Bien-Aime were both selected to the NE10 All-Conference First Team, while offensive lineman
Jorge Geronimo (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) earned a spot on the conference's Second Team. Wide receiver
Daryl Nixon (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) was named to the NE10 All-Rookie team after tallying 165 yards receiving and three touchdowns in his freshman campaign. On the ECAC front, Corrie was named to their First Team, while Bien-Aime and Geronimo each received Honorable Mention. The Setters were also featured in the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll nine times over the season.
Pace set a new home attendance record on Oct. 21 when they hosted Saint Anselm College for the team's Homecoming contest. A sellout crowd of 1,650 witnessed an exciting back-and-forth contest that saw quarterback
Dan Anerella (Old Bridge, NJ/Manalapan) throw for 319 yards and three touchdowns en route to being named Homecoming MVP. Bien-Aime added 100 yards on the ground and two touchdowns of his own.
