PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University men's basketball team battled No. 17 Le Moyne to the final seconds on Saturday afternoon before ultimately falling by a 66-61 margin at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Inside the Numbers
*The Setters (2-6, 1-3 NE10) put together one of their best defensive efforts of season, especially in the second half. Le Moyne shot just 30.4 percent from the floor after halftime, including 3-of-15 from three. The 66 total points for the Dolphins is the lowest total that Pace has allowed this season.
*Pace's offense was led by sophomore
Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, NJ/Southern Regional), who put in a game-high 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He also chipped in a team-high seven boards, to go along with two steals and an assist.
*
Dana Raysor (Willingboro, NJ/St. Patrick / Delaware State University) was the only other Setter to reach double figures with 10. He provided a nice spark in the second half, scoring seven of his points after the break and recording three boards and a steal.
*As a team, the Blue and Gold shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-of-56) and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-18). The Dolphins made 15-of-18 from the free-throw line compared to Pace's 4-of-6.
*After trailing by six at halftime, the Setters outscored Le Moyne in the second half, 31-30.
How it Happened
The Setters fell behind early, falling into an 8-0 hole to open up the contest. Pace registered its first basket of the day off a layup from
Luke McLaughlin (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) a little under four minutes into the half. The Setters began matching the Dolphins shot for shot, eventually cutting the lead down to 21-20 with 7:48 remaining. Le Moyne responded to the Setter resilience with a 10-4 run to regain some distance, eventually climbing out to a 36-26 advantage with just over a minute to play.
Pace closed out the half strong, converting two quick layups to cut the Dolphin lead down to 36-30 at the end of the first half.
Pace continued to battle hard, outscoring the Dolphins 31-30 in the second half. While the Setters were able to match the Dolphin pace over the opening four minutes of the second, Le Moyne managed to put together a 9-2 run over in the following four minutes to regain momentum, leading 49-37.
The Dolphins would eventually build their lead to 14 with 8:50 left in regulation. While the Setters outscored Le Moyne, 18-9, over the remainder of the half, including cutting the edge to just four with a little under a minute to play, the 14-point hole proved too steep to fight back from, as the Dolphins held on for a 66-61 final.
