PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University men's basketball team dropped a 76-68 decision to the University of New Haven on Tuesday night at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The loss moves the Setters to 1-4 in NE10 play this season while New Haven shifts to 3-2.
Inside the Numbers
*Freshman
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, PA/Trinity) put together the best night of his young career, pouring in a season-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He also added four rebounds and three assists. Gilbertson knocked in three of Pace's six three-pointers in the game.
*
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, NY/Long Island Lutheran) also stood out on the offensive side of the ball, scoring 16 points and dishing out three assists. Jacobs has now put in double figures in eight of nine games this season.
*
Greg Poleon (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln / Coffeyville CC) led the squad in rebounding with seven boards, in addition to chipping in eight points.
*Pace shot just 37 percent from the floor in the first half, including 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Blue and Gold tied their most attempts from long range in a game this season at 23.
*The Setters turned the ball over just seven times—their lowest total of the year. Pace has forced more turnovers than given up in all but two games this season.
*New Haven shot 50 percent from both the field and from three-point land. The Chargers finished the game 25-of-50 from the floor, and 9-of-18 from long range.
*A 10-1 run from Pace cut the New Haven lead to just five points with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. The Chargers made three of their last four free throws to ice the game away.
How it Happened
Fueled by five quick points from Gilbertson, Setters jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Hew Haven would respond, however, eventually evening the score at 10-10. From there, the Chargers maintained most of the momentum in the first half. A 10-3 run from the visitors built up a 17-10 edge. New Haven's lead stayed at five-to-eight points for much of the opening frame. Pace would hang tough, though, ending the half on a quick 5-1 spurt to head to the break down just four, 32-28.
The opening moments of the second half proved costly for the Blue and Gold as New Haven put together a 13-2 run over the first five and a half minutes. Pace's cold start produced a 45-32 advantage for the visitors, who preserved that double-digit lead until less than two minutes left in the game. A Gilbertson three-ball sparked a 10-1 stretch for the Setters to slim the advantage to just 73-68 with 54 ticks left. That would be as close as Pace would get, falling by the eventual eight-point margin.
