WATERBURY, Conn. – Despite getting a 23-point effort from freshman
Lauren Schetter (Fishkill, NY/Beacon High School), the Pace University women's basketball team dropped its first contest of the season, 69-64, at Post University on Saturday. The defeat moves the Setters' record to 3-1 on the early season.
Inside the Numbers
*Schetter's 23 points marked a career-high in just her fourth collegiate contest. She finished the afternoon 10-of-17 from the floor with seven rebounds and a steal. Schetter is now averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 boards per game this season.
*
Italee Brown-Smikle (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) joined Schetter in double figures with 10 and 12 points, respectively. Seeing her first action of the season, Brown-Smikle also added two rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
*Senior
Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) led the Blue and Gold with four assists, in addition to six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Freshman
Iliana Krasniqi (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) hauled in a team-high nine boards.
*As a team, Pace shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor while making just 4-of-15 (27 percent) from beyond the arc.
How it Happened
It was the Schetter show early on, as the rookie tallied nine points and five rebounds in the first quarter alone. Behind the freshman's early contributions and buckets from
Jackie DelliSanti (Commack, NY/Commack), Rosalbo and
Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining), the Setters led 15-12 after the first 10 minutes.
The Eagles hung tough in the second quarter, chipping away at Pace's edge and eventually taking a 21-17 lead. After Post extended the advantage to 32-27, Pace ended the first half with four-constructive free throws from DelliSanti and Brown-Smikle to make it a one-point deficit at the break. Monteleone led the Pace attack in the second quarter with six points.
The teams continued to trade baskets to begin the second half, with a pair of Monteleone free throws tying the score at 39-39. The Eagles and Setters then each exchanged 9-0 runs, leading to another stalemate. An old-fashioned three-point play from Schetter halted the Post run, while another bucket from the freshman tied the game at 48-48 at the end of the third quarter.
It was another back-and-forth beginning to the final frame, with both squads exchanging momentum. Following a ties at 51-51 and 53-53, a quick 5-0 run from Post created a lead that they wouldn't surrender. The Setters were able to cut the edge to just one on two occasions—the first at 62-61 with a
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) three-pointer, and the second at 64-63 after a Schetter layup—but that would be as close as the margin would get. The Setters missed their final five shots from the floor, while Post made six-of-nine from the free-throw line in the final quarter.
