No. 7 Pace Field Hockey Knocks Off No. 4 LIU Post, Sets Program Record for Wins

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – In a game where quality of shots overcame quantity, the seventh-ranked Pace University field hockey team defeated fourth-ranked LIU Post by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday. The win improved the Setters' record to 10-1 on the year, setting a new program record for victories in a season.

Although the Blue and Gold registered only five shots against the Pioneers, they were able to get two past LIU goalkeeper Rachel Vellis. With the score knotted at 1-1 at the half, junior midfielder Rachel Platko (Hanover Township, PA/Holy Redeemer) was able to bury home the game-winner off an assist from freshman Lieke van Nieuwenhuizen (Utrecht, Netherlands/St. Bonifatius) in the 37th minute. For Platko, it was her third goal of the season.

While Pace was able to make the most of its offensive opportunities, another stellar performance by senior goalkeeper Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, CT/Stamford) shut down a Pioneer attack that registered 17 shots. Sanchez Alvarez made a season-high 11 saves in 70 minutes of action. It is second time this season that Sanchez Alvarez has reached double-digit stops.

The Setters opened up the scoring in the 13th minute on their second shot of the game. After turning away a pair of LIU Post shots on one end, the Blue and Gold put the pressure on the Pioneers' defense. After junior Carly Corbett (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had a shot blocked, classmate Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) registered her fourth goal of the season on the rebound. Corbett picked up her first point of the season on the assist.

The Pioneers evened the score four minutes later, as Emily Miller posted her 16th goal of the season off an assist from Sammy Bell.

In addition to the top-notch play from Sanchez Alvarez, the Setters received a pair of defensive saves—one in each half from Margaret Maclean (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Louisa Wegener (Hamburg, Germany/Wilhelm Gymnasium). Maclean now ranks second the NE10 with five defensive stops this season.
