PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A dominant second half propelled the seventh-ranked Pace University field hockey team past Bentley University on Saturday by a score of 3-0 at Finnerty Field. The shutout victory moves the Setters to 11-1, improving on their program record for most wins in a single season.
After a slow first half where the Blue and Gold were limited to only four shots, the Setters came out in control in the closing 35 minutes. A majority of the half was played on Bentley's side of the field, thanks in part to Pace logging 11 penalty corners versus the Falcons' three. The consistent attack was able to finally find an opening in the 61
st minute, as junior
Jenna Sanossian (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) was able to bury a feed from freshman
Lisette de Bruin (Bilthoven, Netherlands/Het Nieuwe Lyceum) to open up the scoring with her fifth goal of the season. De Bruin registered her fourth assist on the score.
With the shutout broken, the Setters' attack continued to be relentless on the Bentley side of the field, scoring two more times in the following four minutes. Freshman
Aniek Kroezen (Leidschendam, Netherlands/Gymnasium Novum) scored her first goal of the season in the 62
nd minute, while junior
Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) was able to put the game away with her fifth tally this year in the 65
th minute.
The Blue and Gold outshot Bentley, 10-6, in the second half, and won the total shots battle for the day, 14-8.
Senior netminder
Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, CT/Stamford) had another great performance in goal, recording her seventh shutout on the year. Sanchez Alvarez made six saves in 70 minutes, dropping her goals-against average to 0.49 this season.
With the victory, Pace improves to 5-1 this season against division opponents.
