Pace Women’s Basketball Falls Late to Assumption

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University's women's basketball team battled against one of the Northeast-10 Conference's top teams in Assumption College, but came up on the wrong side of a 67-61 decision Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
- The Setters came flying out of the gate, opening the game with an 8-0 run, capped off with sophomore Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) finishing through contact and draining the free throw at the 8:16 mark.
- Assumption's Kiera O'Donnell then made a layup, but Monteleone answered back with another basket in the paint, which started a 9-0 run to give the Setters a 17-2 lead with 4:51 remaining in the first period.
- Late in the quarter, after a five points were scored by the Greyhounds, senior Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) knocked down a 10-foot jump shot, followed by freshman Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining) draining a jumper with 19 seconds left in the frame to give Pace a 21-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER
- Freshman Jackie DelliSanti (Commack, NY/Commack) knocked down a mid-range jumper for the first basket of the second period to push the Setters ahead by 16 points.
- Later in the period, Monteleone drained a three, and 45 seconds later, graduate student Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) connected on one from downtown as well to take a 34-18 advantage over the Greyhounds.
- Assumption's Abby McKanna made a three, but DelliSanti responded with three the hard way after she finished through the foul and knocked down the free throw with 2:27 remaining, leaving Pace up by 19.
- Late in the second, Monteleone finished inside, but Assumption scored the last points of the half as Jo Impellizeri hit a layup and made a free throw, sending the teams to the locker room with a 41-24 score in favor of the home team. 
 
HALFTIME STATS
- Sophomore Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) led all scorers Setters with 14 points at the break.
- Graduate student Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) added 11 points.
- Assumption's Abby McKanna led the Greyhounds with six points at halftime.
 
THIRD QUARTER
- Impellizeri split two foul shots to open up the second half, but 20 seconds later, Dodge improved Pace's lead with an easy basket off the glass.
- Oskam then finished a jumper through contact and drained the foul shot to make it a 21-point game.
- Impellizeri finished a layup and Kelly Carey made a three, but Monteleone did not shy away from the Greyhounds, finishing another old-fashioned three-point play for a 49-30 Pace lead.
- Carey made two from the free-throw line at the 40-second mark, but Oskam drew a foul herself, and made both to lead Pace into the final frame with a 53-36 advantage.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Greyhounds looked like a completely different team as the fourth began, opening up with a 16-2 run to get within three at 55-52 with 4:52 to play.
- The teams traded baskets, and a layup by Dodge gave Pace a 59-54 edge with 4:04 on the clock.
- Impellizeri went to the line twice over the Greyhounds' next three possessions, making one each time to get within three again.
- O'Donnell sank one from in close to make it a one-point game with 2:44 to play, and Impellizari tied it after once again making 1-of-2 from the line with 1:17 left in regulation.
- O'Donnell gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the game with a layup at the 47-second mark, and Allison Stoddard increased the lead with a pair of free throws with 26 seconds remaining.
- Monteleone got Pace back within two after banking in a jumper, but four more three throws down the stretch helped the Greyhounds secure the win.
 
SETTER STATS
- Monteleone tied her career-high with 23 points on the afternoon, also adding three rebounds.
- Oskam scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds in the tough loss.
- Dodge finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
- DelliSanti added seven points and a team-high four assists.
 
GREYHOUNDS LEADERS
- Impellizeri led the Greyhounds with 19 points, seven rebounds and matched DelliSanti's four assists.
- Carey added 13 points along with two rebounds and two assists.
- O'Donnell scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter and added five rebounds and two assists.

- Assumption: 12-4 (7-4 NE10)
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
- The Setters will hit the road and visit Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, for another NE10 matchup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
