Zeoli Nets Early Winner as Pace Soccer Rolls Past Malone in Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Senior Alyssa Zeoli (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay East Fishkill), in her first game back after missing all of 2015 with an injury, scored in the 18th minute for the Pace University women's soccer team in its season opener against Malone University, and it proved to be enough as the Setters picked up a 3-0 victory in the opener of the Palm Beach Atlantic Kickoff Classic.
 
PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF
  • -In her first game since the 2014 season, when she was the Setters' team-leading scorer, Zeoli scored the first goal of the season for Pace.
  • -Junior goalkeeper Aisha Chauhan (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) set a new program record with eight shutouts in 2015. She picked up a six-save shutout in Thursday's opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • -Zeoli netted the first goal of the game in the 18th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • -Freshman Alicia Buchanan (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) netted her first career goal with 26 seconds left before halftime for a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
  • -Senior Delany Williams (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) added one more for Pace in the 80th minute.
  • -The game was called with 4:33 to play after a delay caused by lightning.
 
PACE LEADERS
  • -Zeoli, Buchanan and Williams each scored their first goals of the season.
  • -Junior Drew Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, NY/Valley Central) assisted Buchanan's goal late in the first.
  • -Chauhan goes to 1-0 with six saves and her first shutout of the season.

  • -Malone: 0-1
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • -Pace outshot Malone, 10-6, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • -The Setters earned four corner kicks and gave up just three.
  • -Pace illustrated its depth by playing 22 different student-athletes in the game.
  • -Malone keeper Haleigh Seman stopped five shots.

  • -Pace challenges tournament host Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.
