BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University women's basketball team opened the season on the road with a 74-58 win over non-conference opponent LIU Post during the ECC/NE-10 Challenge on Friday at the Pratt Recreation Center. Junior
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic)'s game-high 18 points and six assists led the Setters past the Pioneers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
- Pace scored the first points of the 2016-17 season off a jumper by
Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) at the 9:39 mark.
- A three-pointer by Rubin helped the Setters keep the Pioneers scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of the contest holding a 5-0 lead.
- A Pioneer layup, followed by a three-pointer tied the game with 6:03 remaining in the firsst.
- There were three lead changes in the quarter.
- Pace outscored LIU Post 16-11 by the end of the quarter, and Rubin lead all players with seven points.
2nd Quarter
- Oskam once again put up the first points of the quarter, gliding in a layup within the first 15 seconds.
- The Pioneers scored the next four points with back-to-back baskets.
- The Setters responded with back-to-back scores of their own to bring the lead to 22-15.
- The Setters led by as many as 10 points after Oskam hit a jumper at 3:36 to give Pace a 27-17 advantage.
- Pace outscored LIU Post 14-10 in the quarter, and headed into the half with a 30-21 advantage.
- Both teams entered the half with 23 rebounds.
3rd Quarter
- The Pioneers opened the quarter with a 7-1 run over the Setters to get within three.
- Pace struggled early in the quarter going only 4-of-16 to finish the period with a .250 field goal percentage.
- The Setters made up points from the free throw line, going 8-of-12.
- The Pioneers brought the score to within two after a series of baskets, closing in on the Setters at 33-31.
- A shot from beyond the arc from sophomore
Chelsea Schultz (Commack, NY/Commack) gave Pace the boost they needed to finish the quarter on an 11-5 run.
- The Setters ended up outscoring the Pioneers, 17-15, to take a 47-36 lead into the fourth.
4th Quarter
- The Pioneers managed to score the first points in the fourth when Kylie Garrett laid one up into the net.
- Pace took a 13-point lead after consecutive jumpers from Rubin with nine minutes left to go in the game.
- The Setters lead increased after two good layups from both senior
Aurellia Cammock (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore / Iona College) and sophomore
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane), putting Pace up 57-40.
- The Pioneers brought the score back within 15 after a three-pointer by Garrett at the 3:09 mark.
- The Setters led by as many as 20 points with less than two minutes left in the contest.
- The Pioneers got within 12 with less than a minute to play, but the Setters held on late to claim the season-opening victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Rubin finished with a game-high 18 points and six assists. She also added a steal for the Setters.
- Freshman
Italee Brown-Smikle (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) had 12 points and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She contributed six rebounds for Pace to cap off a solid debut.
- Junior
Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) finished with nine points and four assists. She also played well on defense, adding two steals and five rebounds.
- Cammock pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive boards, in just 15 minutes on the court. She added seven points as well.
LIU POST LEADERS
- Garrett led the Pioneers with 16 points on the evening, including three long balls.
- Sasha Patterson contributed 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

- Pace will return to LIU Post for day two of the ECC/NE-10 Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 12, to take on NYIT at 7:30 p.m.
