Pace Volleyball Sweeps Assumption to Cap off Strong Weekend

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Pace University women's volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a pair of crucial Northeast-10 Conference victories after taking down Assumption College in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Plourde Recreation Center.

Pace 3, Assumption 0 (25-19, 25-17, 28-16)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- The Setters controlled the game early on, but a five-point run for the Greyhounds gave the home team a 13-10 advantage.
- Pace fell behind, 17-13, before taking nine of the next 10 points to go up, 22-18.
- Assumption got one back, but the Setters kept the momentum and scored the final three points, all on kills, to take the first set, 25-19.
 
SET 2
- Pace quickly ran out to a 9-3 lead in the second frame.
- Assumption used a 6-2 run to get back within two at 11-9.
- The Setters scored in chunks throughout the rest of the set, slowly increasing the lead until claiming a 25-17 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
SET 3
- The third set went back-and-forth throughout, but the Greyhounds managed to hold an 11-7 advantage early on, forcing Pace to call a timeout.
- A 7-1 run for the Setters gave them a 14-12 lead, but the set was later knotted up at 17-17.
- The game was close late, but the Setters found themselves facing set point for the Greyhounds at 24-23.
- A service error tied it up at 24-24, and then a kill by sophomore Kathleen Benson (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) gave Pace match point at 25-24.
- An attack error by the Setters once again tied up the set, but an error for the Greyhounds once again gave Pace match point at 26-25.
- A kill by Assumption's Olivia Burke kept the match going, but an error by Zara Velez once again gave Pace a match-point opportunity.
- Once final attack error by the Greyhounds finally ended the set, with Pace taking a 28-26 win and a 3-0 victory on the afternoon.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) threw down a match-best 14 kills and completed a double-double with 10 digs.
- Freshman Maria Snelling (University Heights, OH/Gilmour Academy) had 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, and hit a stellar .417.
- Freshman Samantha Nidini (Houston, TX/Clearlake) led the floor by dishing out 45 assists in her three sets, adding 14 digs for a double-double of her own.
- Freshman Danielle Vaiano (Seaford, NY/St. Anthony's) picked up a team-high 21 digs.
- Benson and junior Colette Clarke (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) each registered eight kills and two blocks.

UP NEXT
- The Setters return to action on Friday, Nov. 4, when they host Bloomfield College in a non-conference match at the Goldstein Fitness Center at 7 p.m.
- Pace then hosts Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 5, when they take on Saint Michael's College in NE-10 action. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m., with the Senior Day ceremony taking place shortly before the match begins.
