Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dodge’s Double-Double Fuels Pace Women’s Basketball to Victory over Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – Fueled by junior Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey)'s third double-double of the season, the Pace University women's basketball team beat Post University, 75-47, in a non-conference matchup Monday at the Drubner Center. The Setters' record improves to 8-6 overall with the victory, while the Eagles fall to 0-13.

Dodge utilized her size inside to put the Setters on the board early on with two layups, the first assisted by sophomore Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and the second dished out by freshman Stephanie Svoboda. The Eagles cut their deficit to one, but Svoboda knocked down a three and then a jumper to help the Setters pull ahead in the first. Post's Lexus Childs-Harris connected on 1-of-2 free throws, but the Setters still led 12-9 at the end of the first frame.

Freshman Chelsea Schultz (Commack, NY/Commack) knocked down a long ball to start off the scoring for the second quarter. Graduate student Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) went on to score eight of the next ten points for the Setters as they led 23-18 with 4:45 left in the quarter. Freshman Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) knocked down a triple 30 seconds later to begin an 11-3 run, and the Setters closed the first half with a 34-23 lead.

The Setters were outstanding in the first half defensively, allowing only 23 points. They held their opponent to 25 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from three-point range.

The Setters carried their scoring to the third quarter, as graduate student Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) started them off with a three 13 seconds into the second half. Then, at the 8:44 mark, Maynard knocked down a pull-up jumper which helped lead to a 25-11 third period in favor of the Setters. Monteleone scored the last two of her eight third-quarter points with a layup with 33 seconds remaining to push the Setters ahead, 59-34.

Pace began the scoring in the final frame as Rubin drained a long ball assisted by Svoboda, followed by another three on their next possession by freshman Brianna Nickson (Haledon, NJ/Passaic County Technical). With 2:37 remaining in regulation, senior Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) finished a layup to pull ahead by 27. After a jumper and a free throw by Svoboda, Schultz added two more free throws late in the game to help the Setters grab a 75-47 win over Post.

Pace's bench was phenomenal, outscoring Post's bench, 31-10. Playing exceptionally well on defense, Pace held its opponent to just 25 percent shooting from the field and 15.4 percent from downtown.

Dodge added three blocks to her 12 points and 12 rebounds. Maynard and Monteleone led the Setters with 13 points each. Maynard added three rebounds, while Monteleone pulled down four. Svoboda added eight points with three rebounds and three assists.

The Setters return to action Wednesday, Jan. 6, when they welcome Saint Anselm College to the Goldstein Fitness Center for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
