PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University Football team ran the ball for 273 yards on Saturday but fell short by a score of 31-14 at home against Saint Anselm. Junior
Delaney Wallace led the Setters with 110 yards versus the Hawks.
Saint Anselm received the opening kickoff and took it 23 yards to their own 41 yard line. After advancing the ball to the Pace six yard line, the Setters defense forced a turnover as sophomore
Zach Downey picked off a Hawk pass in the end zone.
Later in the first, freshman quarterback
Dan Anerella completed back-to-back passes to Wallace and
Luiz Ribeiro. However a pair of incompletions would lead to a Setters punt.
The Setters forced a big play during the next Saint Anselm possession. Trailing by seven points, sophomore
Micah Hunter picked off a Hawk pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7. The pick six was Hunter's second in as many games.
Later in the second, following a Saint Anselm touchdown, Pace put together a solid drive of their own. Wallace ripped off runs of 10 and six yards on consecutive carries before grabbing a 10 yard reception. A fumble later ended the drive and the Setters trailed 14-7 at halftime.
Pace tied the game at 14-14 on their very first possession of the second half. Wallace gained nine yards on first down before contributing a 57 yard carry to put the Setters in the red zone. Three plays later, sophomore
Jhalen Bien-Aime capped the drive off with a four yard touchdown carry.
A few drives later the Hawks were driving again. On second down and nine,
David Grant came up with a big sack to push Saint Anselm back and hold them to an eventual field goal.
In the fourth quarter the Setters put together another impressive drive. Backed up inside their own 10 yard line, Bien-Aime got the ball rolling with a 40 yard carry. Two plays later he started a string of three straight carries where he totaled six, five, and 12 yards. However, an eventual missed field goal saw the Setters come up empty. Pace lost by a final score of 31-14 after the Hawks added another touchdown late in the game.
As a unit, the Setters out-rushed the Hawks 273 to 215. Individually, Wallace led the rushing attack with 110 yards on 14 carries for an average of 7.9 a clip. He added three receptions for 24 yards. Bien-Aime added 91 yards on 12 carries while
Valentino Miles contributed 46 yards. Anerella tossed for 80 yards on 8-16 passing while Ribeiro led the Setters with 30 receiving yards on a pair of catches.
Defensively,
Matthew Corrie piled up a game-best 12 tackles including two for loss. Senior
Jamir Gee and junior
Gavin Maher each contributed nine tackles with Maher adding a fumble recovery. Hunter totaled seven tackles with an interception he returned 41 yards for a touchdown and Downey added five tackles with an interception.
The Setters return to the field on Saturday for their first road game of the season. They will hit the road to North Easton, Mass. for an NE-10 showdown against Stonehill at 6:00 p.m.
