Peter Sharp and
Anthony Gadaleta each tallied three goals apiece to help the Setters earn a 12-9 victory over the Mercy Mavericks in the ECAC Championship.
After Mercy jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Setters rallied with three unanswered goals to end the first quarter. Gadaleta scored his 19
th goal of his rookie season on an assist by
Wyatt Barfoot before freshman
Christopher Brown scored a pair of goals late in the quarter, with
Ryan O'Hagan and
Liam Brennan picking up assists. Thanks to the late flurry, the Setters led Mercy 3-1 after the first quarter.
The Setters stayed hot in the second quarter. Midway through the period, Sharp beat the goalkeeper for his 17
th tally of the season. One minute later, Freshman
John Oteri found the back of the net to give Pace a 5-1 lead. After Mercy added a late goal, the Setters led 5-2 at the break.
Pace netted the first score in the third quarter as well. Just 2:47 into the half, Brennan tallied the 26
th goal of his freshman campaign to give the Setters a 6-2 advantage. Just over four minutes later, Gadaleta scored his second of the game on an assist by
Tyler Meigel. Sharp scored his second of the game with 7:54 left on the clock in the third before Gadaleta completed the hat-trick with a goal assisted by Barfoot.
The Setters ended the quarter with a pair of goals as Sharp also tallied a hat-trick while captain
Matthew Cossidente beat the goalkeeper for his only goal of the day. After the six goal output in the third, Pace entered the locker room leading 11-5.
After the Mavericks opened the fourth quarter with a pair of scores, Meigel shut the door on the comeback with a goal at the 2:36 mark that gave Pace a 12-7 advantage. The Setters allowed two late goals, but hung on to win the ECAC Championship by a final score of 12-9.
Senior
Michael Bonitatibus was named most outstanding player after a dominant performance between the pipes for the Setters.
Gadaleta and Sharp each led the team with three scores and both scooped up two groundballs apiece. Brown tallied two goals while Meigel and Brennan each recorded a goal and an assist. Cossidente and Oteri each scored one goal.
Jeremy Wiley led the team with six groundballs, adding two caused turnovers.
Brandon Donnellan scooped up five groundballs while Barfoot tallied two assists, three groundballs, and a caused turnover.
Bonitatibus played all 60 minutes in net, allowing nine goals while tying a season-high with 18 saves. He faced 44 shots and registered a .667% save percentage to help him earn MVP honors.
