GARDEN CITY, NY- The #8 seed Setters fell to top seed Caldwell 6-2 in the opening day of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Pace is still alive in the double elimination bracket and will face the loser of #4 Adelphi/#5 Wilmington on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 pm on the campus of Adelphi University. The Adelphi-Wilmington game was suspended in the 13th inning, tied at 1-1 and will resume on Saturday morning at 10 am.
Both pitchers dominated the early action as both teams were hitless and scoreless after two inning of play. The Setters broke through in the third with the first hit of the game as senior
Natalie Gellos ripped a double to left for Pace's first hit of the tournament. Pace loaded the bases in the frame as they broke through with the first run of the game as
Jeane Drury reached base an error to drive in a run.
Caldwell rallied in their half of the third as they scored four runs with the coming on a Kortney Craker homerun to right center. The Cougars added a pair of runs in the fifth as they pushed ahead to 6-1 lead after five innings.
Pace had one final threat in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter
Surina Sandhu launched a leadoff solo homerun that hit the foul pole to get things going. The Setters proceeded to load the bases with one out but Caldwell retired the final two batters to take the game 6-.
For the Setters, Gellos had a big day, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, while
Shelby Yung went 1-for-3. On the bump,
Caitlin McCann got the start, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits to fall to 11-5 on the season.
Jaclyn Flores came on in relief, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while
Kaitlynn Nelson pitched a scoreless final inning for the Setters.
The Setters will face the loser of the Adelphi-Wilmington in an elimination game on Saturday at 1:30 on the campus of Adelphi University.
