PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Tom Midolo blasted his fifth homerun of the season to help the Setters prevail against the Le Moyne Dolphins on Friday. Following the victory, Pace advances to 19-17, 10-6 NE-10 Southwest, while the Dolphins fall to 14-20, 7-9 NE-10 Southwest.
Le Moyne added a run in each of the first two innings, but the Setters responded in the bottom of the second when senior Midolo went yard to put the Setters on the board. The solo shot cut the deficit to 2-1.
Starter
Tim Deegan surrendered a leadoff double to start the third, but the Pace defense sent the Dolphins back empty in the frame. The next batter hit into a fielder's choice as the Setters tagged out the lead runner in a rundown ending at third base. Deegan forced a groundout before fanning a batter to end the frame.
In the top of the fourth, Le Moyne had the leadoff batter get on board via error. After a groundout and a walk, Deegan forced a popup, and
Michael Gulino gunned the runner trying to advance at third base to end the frame.
In the bottom of the inning, the offense again struck for the Setters. Junior
Frank Mayo led off the inning with a base-hit. After advancing to third base on a pair of wild pitches, Midolo again came through, this time with a game-tying single to right field.
During the top half of the fifth, the Setters turned yet another double play. After a groundout and a single, the next batter popped up to second base and
Andrew Coffey made a fantastic play to double the runner up at first base, ending the inning.
More solid defense from the Setters in the top of the sixth inning. After surrendering a pair of walks, a member of the Dolphins belted a bloop single to center field. After coming up short on the diving attempt,
John Kukura got on his feet and sent a rocket to the plate to retire the runner attempting to score.
Junior
Dylan Mouzakes entered in relief of Deegan in the seventh inning. He set the Dolphins down in order, adding a strikeout. Then in the eighth, he again held Le Moyne hitless.
The Setters took the lead in the bottom half of the eighth frame. Sophomore
Cory Capaldi led off the frame with a single, and advanced to second on a SAC bunt from Coffey.
Brett Bittiger took the plate next and delivered the key hit when he belted a go-ahead RBI-single to left center field.
Mouzakes stayed in the game in the ninth inning. After surrendering a walk, the Pace defense once again came through with a double play. With two outs and a man on first, senior
Josh Grant entered the game. After pitching the batter to a full count, he forced a foul out to left field, securing the victory.
Midolo went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Mayo and Capaldi each went 1-3 with a run scored. Bittiger and LoBello also each went 1-3, with Bittiger adding an RBI.
Deegan started the game's first six innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits while adding a pair of Ks. Mouzakes (2-2) earned the win after tossing 2.2 innings of relief, holding the Dolphins to just one hit while fanning one batter. Grant picked up his third save of the season after tossing the game's final out.
The Setters return to the diamond tomorrow when they head back to SUNY Purchase for their season finale. First pitch of a doubleheader against Le Moyne will be tossed at 12:30 p.m.
