Setters Sweep Dolphins, Claim Top Seed in NE-10 Southwest Division

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Setters earned a pair of victories and claimed the NE-10 Southwest #1 seed for next week's Northeast-10 Championship after outhitting the Dolphins 20-12 on Saturday. With the win, the Setters conclude the regular season with a record of 21-17, 12-6 NE-10 Southwest while the Dolphins end their 2015 campaign at 14-22, 7-11 NE-10 Southwest.

Senior Jonathan Chudy started game one for the Setters. After allowing a run in the first inning, he settled down and held the Dolphins scoreless over the next three frames, surrendering just one hit while fanning three batters.

Pace started their first rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a leadoff out, Nick LoBello blasted a single to left field. Sophomore John Kukura came up next and blasted a double to left center, giving the Setters runners at second and third. Sophomore Cory Capaldi took the plate next and drove in the first run for the Setters on an RBI-groundout, tying things at 1-1. Pace added another run on the next batter thanks to a wild pitch and an error by the Dolphins.

In the fifth, Chudy retired the side in order, forcing a fly-out while striking out a pair of Dolphins.

The Pace bats came alive once again in the fifth inning. Junior Brett Bittiger led off the inning with a single that was followed by a SAC bunt and a groundout. Senior Tom Midolo plated Bittiger during the next at bat when he beat out an infield chopper with a slide into first base.

Chudy was again dominant in the sixth, setting the Dolphins down in order with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts. The diving play at second base by Andrew Coffey with two outs helped Chudy retire his 12th straight batter. That streak ended in the seventh when Chudy allowed a one-out single, but the Setters went around the horn during the very next at bat, forcing a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the seventh, freshman Paul Piccolino got a rally going with a one-out single. After LoBello reached base for the fourth time on the day with a walk, Kukura belted an RBI-double to left center that scored a run, and gave Pace runners at second and third.

Chudy locked down the victory for the Setters after finishing the game's final two innings. After allowing a one-out single in the ninth, the Pace defense once again stepped up as they turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and earn the win.

Kukura went 2-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored while LoBello went 2-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Capaldo and Midolo each recorded one hit with one RBI.

On the hill, Chudy (4-4) picked up the win after tossing a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits with eight K's.

In the nightcap, Pace tallied their first run of the game in the bottom half of the first. After two quick outs, Midolo beat out an infield single to the pitcher. In the sixth frame, Rizzitelli once again set the Dolphins down in order, forcing a groundout and a lineout before fanning a Dolphin for the third out.

The Setters added two more in the bottom of the inning. After Piccolino drew a one-out walk, Kyle Cashman belted a pinch-hit single to give Pace runners on the corners. The Setters added a score on a Dolphin error before Coffey plated the second run on a sacrifice fly.

Junior Mike Sweeney entered in relief of Rizzitelli in the seventh inning and retired the side in order, forcing a pair of groundouts and a fly-out.

In the bottom half of the seventh, after two quick outs, Kukura reached on an error and advanced to second base. After he swiped third, Gulino knocked him in with a single to left field.

After Le Moyne added four runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to just 7-6, the Setters tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame.
