Garran Tosses Complete Game to Help Setters Earn Win

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior pitcher Josh Garran tossed a complete game while allowing no earned runs to help the Setters earn a 10-2 victory over NE-10 rival Adelphi. The win helps the Setters retain a three game lead over the Panthers for first place in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division. Following the victory, Pace advances to 13-10, 7-1 NE-10 Southwest while Adelphi falls to 9-10, 4-4 NE-10 Southwest.

The Setters got out to a quick lead to in the first frame when Andrew Coffey led off the game with a single up the middle. Two batters later, senior Tom Midolo blasted a single through the left side of the infield to give Pace runners on first and second. Nick LoBello came up next and cranked an RBI single to right center field, giving Pace a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore John Kukura came to the dish next and stretched the advantage to 2-0 when he slapped a single through the right side of the infield to plate Midolo.

Garran has been hot as of late and continued that trend early in the game. After sitting the Panthers down in order in the first, he gave up a pair of runs in the second, both unearned, to tie the score at 2-2.

The Pace offense exploded in the third inning. Coffey began the frame with a single, his second of the day. After Frank Mayo was clunked by a pitch, Midolo came to the plate and bombed a three-run jack to climb up 5-2. Later in the inning, Cory Capaldi cranked an RBI-single after Kukura got on base by a walk. Senior Brett Bittiger ended the crucial rally when he hit a single to center field, giving Pace a 7-2 lead.

A five run lead was more than enough for Garran who was lights out down the stretch. In the next three innings he allowed just one hit while striking out  one batter.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Setters had a pair of baserunners when Coffey and Midolo each drew walks. LoBello came up after the Midolo walk and drilled an RBI-single to left field that plated Coffey.

Over the next two innings Garran allowed no hits while giving up just one free pass and striking out a pair. The Setters entered the top of the eighth with an 8-2 lead.

After Mayo led off the frame with a single, Midolo reached on an error that gave Pace runners second and third. After a strikeout, Kukura added an insurance run after bombing a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mayo. Paul Piccolino came up next and added to the advantage when he sent a single to right center field to give Pace a 10-2 lead.

Garran held the Panthers to no runs in the final two innings. He gave up four hits while striking out three batters to preserve the win for Pace.

Midolo led the way for Pace with a 2-3 mark from the dish, adding three runs scored and three RBIs. LoBello and Kukura each recorded two hits with a pair of RBIs while Bittiger, Capaldi, and Piccolino each added an RBI.

Garran tossed all nine innings and earned the win (4-1) after allowing no runs while giving up nine hits and striking out six batters.

Pace returns to the field on Saturday, April 11th when they travel to Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
